There’s a new kid on the block when it comes to psychedelic practices: microdosing. This trend is spreading fast, among psychonauts and non-psychonauts alike. Media attention for this phenomenon has also skyrocketed, so it’s very likely that you’re familiar with the term. You probably also know that microdosing on LSD is hot in Silicon Valley – but did you know that Magic Truffles can be used for the same purpose? Microdosing with truffles has the benefit that they can be obtained legally or can even be home grown.
What is microdosing?
Microdosing is the practice of ingesting a very low dose of psychedelics, on a regular basis. The goal is not to experience a full-blown psychedelic trip, or actually: not to experience any psychedelic effects at all. The effects should sub-perceptual, so that it’s possible to continue one’s daily routine. Whether it’s work, study, sports or social meetings: none of these activities should be hindered by the microdose. On the contrary.
Why do people microdose?
Although the bulk of the evidence so far is anecdotal, users report benefits in a wide range of areas. The effects that are mentioned most often: increased focus (explaining its popularity among Silicon Valley employees), increased energy, increased creativity and improved social skills. Under the ‘micro-influence’ of acid or mushrooms, it apparently becomes easier to experience flow states. And flow states are pretty awesome. Microdosing psychedelics seems to improve people’s’ lives in very subtle, but real ways.
As one individual describes on his website “Microdosing at work would often alleviate feelings of overwhelm or annoyance with co-workers, essentially ‘re-balancing’ my mood, leaving me more calm and peaceful with a positive outlook.”
Psychedelic researcher James Fadiman – whose book The Psychedelic Explorers’ Guide (2011) is regarded as the microdosing ‘bible’ – mentions the concept of re-balancing as a core characteristic of microdosing. “There is an actual movement towards increased health or wellness – it seems to rebalance people”, he explains to the Huffington Post. “What seems to happen with microdosing is that you’re more attuned to your own real needs”.
Another reason why microdosing has become so popular, is that many users report a relief of mental health problems. Microdosing has been reported to reduce the frequency and intensity of symptoms of (among other conditions) anxiety, PTSD, depression, addiction and ADHD.
How to use truffles for microdosing
When microdosing with truffles, there are a few things to consider. Truffles are available in various varieties and strains – different strains of truffles contain different amounts of psilocybin. And since truffles are a natural product, the psilocybin concentration from one batch to another also varies. There are a few things you can do to make your micro-doses as equal as possible.
First, make sure to always use the same variety of truffles. Second, prepare your micro-doses by first drying the truffles (in a food dehydrator or at low temperature in the oven) and by grinding them (with a coffee-grinder) so that you get a homogenous powder. You can put the powder in capsules, so that microdosing will be as easy as popping a pill with your breakfast!
What is a good truffle microdose?
Unfortunately, the answer is not very precise, since it’s dependent on personal factors such as tolerance and preference and mushroom factors such as the type of truffles and their potency. Generally speaking, a microdose is between 1/10 and 1/20 of a full dose. Of course, how much a full dose is also varies between people – but for truffles it ranges between 5 -15 grams of fresh weight. This means the microdose would be between 0.25 – 1.5 grams of fresh truffle.
Measuring powdered truffles
Let’s say you started off with a full dose of 15 grams of truffles. Truffles contain about 50%-70% water so after drying them you will only have about 30% to 50% of the original weight. This differs per strain. (In comparison: freshly picked mushrooms exists of 90% water). By grinding the dry truffles you will also lose some weight of the residue sticking to the grinder – so use the grinder for this purpose only! Let’s say you are left with 6 grams of dry truffles. If you want to take a microdose of 1/10, this means that you have to take 0.6 grams of powder, or 0.3 grams for a 1/20 dose. So yes: you will need a very precise scale to measure your doses.

Recommended microdosing schedule
Most people follow the schedule proposed by James Fadiman. In this regimen, a microdose is taken twice a week, for a total of 10 weeks. Each microdosing day is followed by a day to observe residual effects, which is then followed by one or two resting days. For example:
Tuesday : Observe residual effects
Friday: Observe residual effects
Repeat for 10 weeks
Final advice; Timing, daily schedules and journaling
To conclude, some final advice on microdosing. First: consider your timing. When taking a microdose for a more productive working day, take it quite soon after waking up. Keep in mind that microdosing later in the day might result in difficulty falling asleep. However, if your purpose is to improve your dancing skills and social experiences, you might want to microdose late afternoon or in the evening. Secondly: it is highly recommended to keep a daily journal, to keep track of the subtle emotional, cognitive, physical or spiritual effects that you may experience. Third: plan your first microdose on a free day, just in case the microdose is not ‘micro’ enough. And lastly: the idea is to continue your regular life and to stick to your everyday schedule. You should not feel any ‘proper’ psychedelic effects while microdosing. If you feel a little trippy, this means you have probably taken a little too much.
