Yep, you can use \u2018em either by yourself or with your homies<em>. So fingers crossed! <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-california-proposes-decriminalising-shrooms\"><em>California Proposes Decriminalising Shrooms <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill\u2019s sponsor \u2014 Sen. <strong>Scott Weiner<\/strong> of San Francisco \u2014 said that SB 519 would remove criminal penalties for holding <em>any<\/em> drugs in California, including \u201chard drugs\u201d like heroin. For sure, it\u2019s a definite move towards stopping the &#8216;War on Drugs&#8217; once and for all. Will California be able to copy the success of a similar measure in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/articles\/psychedelic-culture\/oregon-votes-yes-to-psilocybin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oregon<\/a><\/strong>? Read on to find out!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-health-issue-not-a-criminal-issue\"> <em>\u201cHealth issue, not a criminal issue\u201d <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Fact: The state of California is the largest in America, in terms of population. But here\u2019s another fact\u2026 Thousands of arrests have taken place in California over the years, simply because ordinary folks are caught using psychedelic drugs. This will change soon enough. If SB 519 passes, it can<strong> <em>erase<\/em> past criminal charges<\/strong> for possession from your records\u2014permanently. Wiener told The Guardian that SB 519 will open the doors for an \u201cOregon-style\u201d <em>no-limits<\/em> decriminalisation of psychedelics in the Golden State:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:27px\"><em>\u201cPeople should not be going to jail for possessing or using drugs. We\u2019re not a nuisance to society, but a genuine relief&#8230; medically!\u201d<\/em> <em>&nbsp;<\/em>Tons of scientific research have also been popping up. Magic mushrooms and magic truffles \u2014 like so many psychedelic drugs \u2014are showing <strong>serious potential<\/strong> in treating mental health issues. This includes a host of conditions, such as PTSD, resistant depression, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/articles\/psychedelic-culture\/more-canadians-granted-psilocybin-for-end-of-life-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">end-of-life anxiety<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-social-sharing-of-shrooms\"><em> Social Sharing of Shrooms <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sen. Wiener\u2019s proposal for California stems from previous efforts to do the same, mainly at the city level. Take <strong>Oakland<\/strong>, for example, or across the bay area, or even the surf town of <strong>Santa Cruz<\/strong>. All of these cities in California have fought\u2014and <em>won!<\/em>\u2014their battles. Today, in these cities, cops are barred from arresting folks just for possessing psychedelic drugs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But SB 519 wants to achieve more. If passed, it would fix the state criminal code, to state clearly that you\u2019re allowed to plant and share certain psychedelics. The keyword is <em>\u201cshare\u201d<\/em>, not sell \u2014 coz the sale of trippy substances is still prohibited. But what does it mean, exactly? As long as you\u2019re <strong>not selling<em> or buying<\/em><\/strong>, no charges can be brought against you or your friends. Sounds about right!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-voting-by-ballot-vs-elected-lawmakers\"><em> Voting by Ballot vs. Elected Lawmakers <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the United States, most drug-policy reforms have won through local citizens voting by ballot. California is hoping to do the same thing. <strong>Not with a public vote<\/strong> however, but with elected lawmakers. Will SB 519 survive the dusty, time-worn halls of City Council? Maybe this is the time for a groovy new era of legislation&#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After all, California <em>was <\/em>the first state to allow marijuana for medical use. Due in part to rising scientific evidence at the time. So should history be any different for magic mushrooms, magic truffles, LSD, and ibogaine? <strong>Harm reduction<\/strong> should be prioritised, as the bill reads:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u201cCriminalization has not deterred drug use<\/em><\/strong><em>, and has instead made drug use less safe. It has created an unregulated underground market in which difficult-to-verify dosages and the presence of adulterants, including fentanyl, make the illicit drug supply dangerous.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-exceptions-to-the-rule\"><em> Exceptions to the Rule<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to allowing magic mushrooms, magic truffles, and other psychedelics, there are a few exceptions to the rule.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite its popularity, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peyote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">peyote<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 a hallucinogen found in certain cacti \u2014 is *not* on SB 519\u2019s list of allowed substances. Why is that, you ask? For starters, peyote is sacred to various indigenous rituals. A lot of federally recognised <strong>Native tribes<\/strong> can already use peyote legally in this capacity. (Photo courtesy: Creative Commons)<\/mark><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cNative Americans in the United States were persecuted and prosecuted for their ceremonial practices and use of peyote for more than a century and had to fight numerous legal and political battles to achieve the current protected status.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some other exceptions to SB 519, should it pass into law:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Knowingly giving psychedelic drugs to anyone under 18 years of age;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Possession of said drugs on the grounds of a school;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Driving or operating a vehicle while impaired; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cultivating psychedelic drugs for <em>financial <\/em>gain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-what-now\"><em> What Now?<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As of March 7, 2021, SB 519 is now firmly in the hands of the Commissions on Public Safety and Health. This update comes after the bill got a total of 32  yes votes and 4 no\u2019s during its first hearing. <em>Very<\/em> promising, indeed. Remember? California laws often get passed by elected Senators, and *not* through public voting by ballot. Which is rather a <em>lot <\/em>of control for elected officials. Things look promising, though, for decriminalising the use of <strong>magic mushrooms<\/strong>  and<strong> magic<\/strong> <strong>truffles<\/strong>\u2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both magic mushrooms and truffles are excellent picks for your first full psychedelic experience.  However, if you\u2019re seeking a boost in creativity for your daily tasks, psilocybin is <em>also<\/em> your friend! <strong>Microdosing<\/strong> is<em> <\/em>the new gold rush in California.
