These are called Set and Setting. You see, a psychedelic experience is not<em> just<\/em> about the psychedelic itself. It&#8217;s actually a bit of a throuple situation. Set, setting, and your chosen psychedelic all need some attention. This was most likely down to the different set and setting of each moment. Mystery solved!<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/13.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"231\" height=\"231\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>It is a key concept, and essential knowledge if you want to become a learned shroom expert. We\u2019ve covered it before when laying out&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/blog\/how-to-take-shrooms-for-the-first-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how to trip for the first time<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 but as a key tenet of psychedelic lore and best-practice, it certainly deserves a deep-dive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size:24px\"><strong>So, ready, set<em> (and setting), <\/em>GO!<\/strong> <img decoding=\"async\" role=\"img\" alt=\"????\" src=\"https:\/\/s.w.org\/images\/core\/emoji\/14.0.0\/svg\/1f3c4.svg\"><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is SET?<\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Set\u2019 is all about your inner world. Your mind-SET. Your thoughts, feelings, life-experience, psychology \u2014 you name it \u2014 if it is part of what makes you, <em>you, <\/em>then that&#8217;s part of your set.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/etty-fidele-K_xXdh4lNJM-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"842\" height=\"431\"><p><\/p>\n<figcaption><em><mark>Photo by Etty Fidele on Unsplash<\/mark><\/em><\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/blog\/psychedelic-heroes-timothy-leary\/\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"font-size: 1rem\" rel=\"noopener\">Timothy Leary<\/a>&nbsp;organised it into two subcategories \u2014 immediate and long-range. \u2018Long-range\u2019 covers your established personality and characteristics, while \u2018immediate\u2019 is about what you expect from the trip, and how you\u2019re feeling RIGHT NOW. It is a tricky thing because it\u2019s something you both <em>can <\/em>and <em>can\u2019t <\/em>control.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is SETTING?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Setting\u2019 is a little more straightforward. It&#8217;s literally the physical environment you plan to be in \/ find yourself in when you are tripping. It&#8217;s whether you are inside or outside, surrounded by people or alone.&nbsp; Whether you are in your garden or at a music festival, with a shaman or watching TV \u2014 y\u2019know imagine your trip is a play, and the setting is the theater set. What is it telling you? What props are there? This is an aspect of your trip you can mold to achieve the sort of trip you want.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/krists-luhaers-DSB1MZWsGco-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"841\" height=\"453\"><p><\/p>\n<figcaption><mark><em>Photo by Krists Luhaers on Unsplash<\/em><\/mark><\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Origins of Set and Setting<\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>The origins of set and setting are generally attributed to divisive psychedelic icon Timothy Leary, the concept of which he outlined in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Psychedelic_Experience\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Psychedelic Experience: A Manual Based on the Tibetan Book of the Dead<\/em> <\/a><em>(1964)<\/em>. He certainly <em>coined<\/em> the term we know and love today. However, the fundamentals of set and setting were being explored already over a century ago by the bohemians of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.openculture.com\/2015\/04\/club-des-hachichins.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Club des Hashischins<\/a>, <\/em>a group of elite Parisian intellectuals who spent from 1844-1849 immersing themselves in hashish and its effects. This club included noted figures such as Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Charles Baudelaire, G\u00e9rard de Nerval, Honor\u00e9 de Balzac and Jean Joseph Moreau \u2014 the psychiatrist who supplied the lofty gang with their hash.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Baudelaire-in-1844-1-1024x591.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"840\" height=\"484\"><p><\/p>\n<figcaption><em>Charles Baudelaire in 1844 (possibly high, we don&#8217;t know&#8230;)<\/em> <em><mark>via Wikimedia Commons<\/mark><\/em><\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Moreau noted that the exact same dose of hashish could provide markedly different experiences depending on the environment and character of the individual, writing in 1845;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201ceverything that strikes his [the user\u2019s] eyes and his ears. A word, a gesture, a look, a sound or the slightest noise, by demanding his attention, will confer a special character on his illusions\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Baudelaire was a fan of the method we still dig today \u2014 takin\u2019 a few days off to fully prepare, enjoy, and then integrate your trip.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAny\u2026thoughts of duty that may call on your will and attention at certain moments will cut like a death-knell right through your intoxication, and poison all your pleasure\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018Poison all your pleasure?!\u2019 <\/em>No thanks!<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>He did however state that as long as \u2014&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c&#8230;you find yourself in the right environment, such as a picturesque landscape or an apartment that has been decorated artistically, and if you can also hope for a little music\u201d <\/em>\u2014 your trip would probably go just fine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-psychedelic-knowledge-sharing\">Psychedelic Knowledge Sharing<\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>After this, though appreciated as \u2018great writing\u2019, most of the \u2018Hash-eaters\u2019 club\u2019s conclusions were dismissed as arty bohemian excess. However, in 1960, in a two-psychedelic-giants-meeting-special, writer Aldous Huxley visited Leary and gave him some of the writings by the group. Their observations chimed perfectly with Leary\u2019s own burgeoning research into psilocybin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/artur-kornakov-EUhn2h-FgZc-unsplash.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"838\" height=\"368\"><p><\/p>\n<figcaption><mark><em>Photo by Artur Kornakov on Unsplash<\/em><\/mark><\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>*Note: All of this rich history, of course, misses out on all the ancient and indigenous uses of set and setting which have been going on for millenia. There\u2019s a reason that spiritual psychedelic rituals have similar environmental, preparatory and \u2018vibe\u2019 factors throughout. Over time the&nbsp;<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/blog\/psychedelic-mothers-day-special\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">curanderas<\/a><em>&nbsp;and shamans of these communities have honed the best basis possible for transcendental and healing experiences. As usual, it&#8217;s a case of the ancient knowledge being there all along, but it was not until it was written down in the West that the rest of the world began to pay attention.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-leary-s-greatest-contribution\">Leary&#8217;s Greatest Contribution<\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>But back to the swinging sixties, where Timothy Leary was turning set and setting into a slogan that lodged itself in the brain. And, lucky thing too \u2014 having this guideline to remember, even simply \u2014<em> \u2018good place, good mood\u2019, <\/em>is credited with 1960s psychonauts have majoritively positive experiences. This harm-reduction mantra is thought by many to be Leary\u2019s greatest contribution to the psychedelic culture he helped to build.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Timothy-Leary-Los-Angeles-1989.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"191\" height=\"246\"><p><\/p>\n<figcaption>Timothy Leary in 1989 <\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>In one of his most enthusiastic dives into the subject, in a paper called <em>\u2018On Programming the Pschedelic Experience\u2019, <\/em>Leary theorised that the set and setting for your trip could be tuned so finely to your needs that it would become almost like choosing a TV program. This would be done, Leary suggested via techniques such as mantras, incense, and even yoga positions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>When the psychedelic movement of the \u201860s began to crumble, this research tailed off too. However, it remains a fascinating idea\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Note On Collective Set and Setting<\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe collective set-and-setting conditions presented by a society are its values, its social structure, and its culture.\u201d &#8211; Ido Hartogsohn for MAPS<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Adding another layer to our traditional idea of setting and setting, is the \u2018collective\u2019 set and setting. Like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/blog\/using-jungs-ideas-to-explore-psychedelics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jungs<\/a>&nbsp;\u2018collective consciousness\u2019 this reflects the shared beliefs of the society you are in \u2014 the history, ideas and context. In the 60\u2019s the collective attitude of trippers to this new \u2018magic\u2019 would have been of excitement, revolution and rebellion. Once psychedelics became illegal and rejected as immoral by society, this too would have coloured the experiences of trippers. For example, if you are nervous <em>(even subconsciously) <\/em>of doing something illegal \/ getting in trouble, this could affect your trip. If the public response to psychedelics becomes warmer, will we see a reduction in \u2018bad\u2019 trips caused by fear of getting into \u2018trouble\u2019? Of course, nothing is 100% effective, but with these tips you\u2019re well on your way for a positive shroom-tastic journey!&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How To: Set&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Although your \u2018set\u2019 is a little harder to control, there are many things you can do make it the best it can be be. <\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Firstly<\/strong>: you know yourself. What kind of person you are. What you have experienced in your life. Do not ignore your gut if it is telling you that this is not the right time. Trust yourself. Why are you doing it?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>A psychedelic trip should never be used as an escape, only as an opportunity to learn and grow. Perhaps spend some if this day grounding yourself with nature and \/ or noting down what your intentions are.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>On the <strong>second day<\/strong> take your psychedelic. If you are mentally prepared it is all the more easy to surrender yourself and be fully immersed in your experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>On the <strong>third day<\/strong> rest and begin to integrate your insights. Perhaps you want to talk them through with a friend or therapist. It&#8217;s also a good idea to write about your experience and what you learned, to help you digest it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>If you have this plan in place before you trip, you are likely to be in a more calm mindset \u2014 feeling prepared is key.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How To: Setting<\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>The headline for setting is always \u2018<em>a place that you feel comfortable in\u2019. <\/em>Of course, <em>where<\/em> that place<em> <\/em>is varies from person to person, but therein lies the magic \u2014 it\u2019s always the same, but always different.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Here are some main points to address when deciding on your setting:&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Familiarity<\/strong>: is it important to you that you know your space well? Does being somewhere unfamiliar make you anxious? This is why many people choose to trip at their home, a friends home, or somewhere they go regularly like a local park.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who is there<\/strong>: do you want to trip with others or alone? Are you using a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/blog\/how-to-be-a-trip-sitter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip sitter<\/a>? Will being with people you don\u2019t know bother you? Is there someone important to you that you want nearby?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Safety<\/strong>: how safe is this space? Can you get emotional or medical support if you want it?<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Essential comforts<\/strong>: what do you need near you? Food, water, and a toilet are essential. But do you also want music, comfy cushions, a blanket or nice lights? Private, quiet and comfortable, with a couch or comfy furniture, perhaps some plants and lamps \u2014 uncluttered so your mind can wander freely.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stepping-on-to-the-right-path\">Stepping On To The Right Path<\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Finally, it is good to remember how complex the triad of set, setting, and psychedelic are. Although there are always forces we can\u2019t control, by respecting and preparing for the power of all three components we are stepping on to the right path.
