Even worse than the <em>Bad Place<\/em>, methinks!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kristen has been open about seeking therapy and taking antidepressants. But here\u2019s a <strong>secret<\/strong> that you <em>don\u2019t <\/em>know&#8230; In an episode of the<strong><em> <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.google.com\/feed\/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5zaW1wbGVjYXN0LmNvbS8yb3E0MUpNUg\/episode\/MTg3ZTZlYTEtMWZiOC00MDRjLTk2NGUtOWU5YWU3ZThkNTg3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hypochondriactor <\/a><\/em><\/strong>podcast, Bell revealed that she also takes <strong>psilocybin<\/strong> \u2014 the trippy compound in <strong>magic mushrooms<\/strong> and <strong>truffles!<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-growing-up-with-anxiety\">Growing Up with Anxiety<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cI wasn\u2019t suicidal\u2026. It was just a generalized dark cloud over me. I felt like my real personality was in a tiny cage inside my body.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Kristen was born in Detroit, Michigan to <strong>Lorelei<\/strong>, a registered nurse, and <strong>Tom<\/strong>, a TV news director. Growing up, it was clear that Kristen had caught the performing bug \u2014 and got her first acting agent when she was 14. She is also a trained soprano. As for her childhood? Shortly before the big move, Kristen heard that her best friend <strong>Jenny DeRita<\/strong> was killed in a car accident. The death scarred Kristen for life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cAnxiety and depression? I guess I was about 19. And my mom \u2014 who experiences it as well, she\u2019s a nurse \u2014 had some really great grounding things about the topic in general. And she said, \u2018Look, I suffer from this. It\u2019s called a <\/em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.integrativepsychiatry.net\/serotonin-and-serotonin-deficiency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>serotonin imbalance<\/em><\/a><\/strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.integrativepsychiatry.net\/serotonin-and-serotonin-deficiency\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">.<\/a> I wish I could control it, but I can\u2019t. I take medication for it. And I just want you to know if you start to have these feelings&#8230;there are so many options for you.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-no-shame-in-seeking-help\">No Shame in Seeking Help<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Kristen\u2019s mom told her about how mental illness <em>can<\/em> be inherited \u2014 but is also not necessarily a <em>\u201ccurse\u201d<\/em>. There are tons of tried-and-tested ways to cope with stress, anxiety, and depression. One of them is taking prescribed meds&#8230; paired with <strong>talk therapy<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cAnd she also said, \u2018Make sure you never feel shame, should you be prescribed something, because\u2026 Would you ever tell a diabetic *not* to take their insulin? And I was like, oof.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In her late 20s, Kristen began reading about popular science. While she looked at a few studies on the mind, she stumbled upon a theory. Stuff like getting off an <strong>antidepressant <\/strong>or <strong>antianxiety <\/strong>for good\u2026 because your so-called <em>\u201cmuscle memory\u201d<\/em> takes over. Did it work?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI tried that. It worked for about a year. And after a year I got those symptoms again. And I was like, you know what? If I have to take medication, I have to\u2026 I had a <\/em><strong><em>blood panel<\/em><\/strong><em> done. My levels were fine. I also eat nothing but rabbit food! Green vegetables all the time.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apparently not.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite a vegan lifestyle with plenty of exercise, Kristen <em>still<\/em> got depressed and anxious. Meds weren\u2019t enough. Pills didn\u2019t always work. (Photo courtesy: Creative Commons)<\/mark><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked about her first encounter with <strong>magic mushrooms <\/strong>and meditation, Kristen replied:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cMy husband and I went to T.M. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">(<\/a><\/em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Transcendental Meditation<\/em><\/a><\/strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tm.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">) <\/a>classes before the kids were born. We loved it\u2026 I do feel great when I do it. I rely on a lot of those techniques&#8230;to really ground me. And then [last year I read] <\/em><strong><em>Michael Pollan<\/em><\/strong><em>\u2019s book, <\/em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/How_to_Change_Your_Mind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>\u2018How to Change Your Mind\u2019<\/em><\/a><\/strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/How_to_Change_Your_Mind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">. <\/a>And I was slack-jawed.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michael Pollan goes into detail about the <em>\u201cunderground community\u201d<\/em> of both academics and regular psychonauts. These folks continued to study the effects of<strong> LSD <\/strong>and <strong>psilocybin<\/strong> on so-called healthy &#8216;normals&#8217;. Reading the book helped to change Kristen\u2019s mind on <em>\u201ctrippy\u201d<\/em> drugs\u2026 which are NOT just for partying! She says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cThere are aspects to those two particular drugs that the places you can go in your brain are&#8230;sort of deeper and more healing than anything else, you know? It\u2019s not like alcohol.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-first-shroom-trip\">First Shroom Trip <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>So what was Kristen\u2019s first <strong>magic mushroom trip<\/strong> like?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cI was really interested in doing mushrooms\u2026 to try some psilocybin. To feel what kind of doors open. Have a trip that was my own. And they talk about <\/em><strong><em>Set and Setting<\/em><\/strong><em>, how to make it comfortable. And I am very lucky to be married to an ex-drug addict. Not only did he know where to get the mushrooms\u2026 He babysat me. It was for my birthday.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;Babysitting&#8217; or guiding a novice <em>(or any person, really)<\/em> during a trip is called <strong>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/articles\/psychedelic-culture\/how-to-be-a-trip-sitter\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trip sitting<\/a>\u201d<\/strong>. They help you get in the right mindset (Set) and a comfy place to trip in (Setting). A trip sitter stays sober and alert for the whole time&#8230; Sorta like having a psychedelic lifeguard, or a <strong>designated driver<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI said, \u2018I really would like to experience this. I\u2019m not gonna *party* with it, but I want to know what this feels like. I want to talk while I\u2019m doing it, and I want you to talk to me\u2019. He took me on a walk around the neighborhood\u2026 It was so lovely.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-out-of-body-experience\"> Out-of-Body Experience <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI was so enamored with my own body\u2026 I had gone to the bathroom. <\/em>Coming<em> downstairs wide-eyed, I said, \u2018Dax. I had to pee. I felt the sensation of having to pee. And all of a sudden, this beautiful lady (and I was pointing to my legs) picked me up down the hallway\u2026&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cShe sat me down on the toilet, rolled toilet paper for me, and just put it in my lap till I was done peeing. There is a change in your <em>\u201cbody sense\u201d <\/em>by way of <strong>vibrations<\/strong> <em>(a.k.a. tingling)<\/em>. So some trippers feel smaller or larger. While others feel <em>several <\/em>pounds lighter or heavier. For Kristen, it was like watching her body move on its own&#8230; like a driverless car.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIn my head, I had separated this body that had done so much good in my life, that has taken me through happiness and pain and workouts and laziness.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI couldn\u2019t stop touching my legs and go, \u2018You\u2019re so strong. You\u2019re so elegant.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-shrooms-the-good-place\">Shrooms: The Good Place <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Kristen\u2019s sensitivity has given her juicy, complex roles, both in film and TV. Most recently, she was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role as <strong>Eleanor Shellstrop<\/strong> in NBC\u2019s <em>The Good Place<\/em>. And like any good actor, Kristen often <em>\u201cdisappears\u201d<\/em> into her character\u2019s <strong>persona<\/strong> \u2014 a method that does take its toll on her mental health:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cI do think that\u2019s true. I&#8217;m an <\/em><strong><em>empath<\/em><\/strong><em>. Right now, psilocybin is banned as a <strong>Class A substance<\/strong> in many places. Some U.S. states are <em>definitely <\/em>on track to decriminalise shrooms \u2014 like the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/articles\/political\/california-proposes-decriminalising-shrooms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">upcoming vote in California<\/a><\/strong>, for instance. Just imagine! Psilocybin could be widely available to you sooner, rather than later. <em>(Sunny days ahead? Woot woot!)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what is the<strong> <\/strong><strong><em>Good Place<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>alum up to these days?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cI love rescuing dogs.
