The name given to the full spectrum of psychedelic plants and fungi that can make you trip is &#8216;<em>entheogens<\/em>&#8216;&#8230; these include psilocybin mushrooms and truffles, ayahuasca, mescaline, peyote, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/articles\/psychedelic-culture\/how-ibogaine-changes-lives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ibogaine<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-beneficial-for-treating-ailments\"><em>Beneficial for Treating Ailments <\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>The vote cited various reasons to decriminalise the &#8216;natural&#8217;. Chief among them is the scientific research being carried out, proving just how beneficial entheogens are for treating mental health conditions. These can range from substance abuse, addiction, PTSD, chronic depression, end-of-life anxiety, grief,  and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/blog\/microdosing-psilocybin-cluster-headaches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>cluster headaches<\/b><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>The council also saw the use of natural psychedelics in the traditional and religious context.  <strong>Shamanic rituals<\/strong> can <em>\u201ccatalyse profound experiences of personal and spiritual growth.\u201d<\/em> <\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"933\" height=\"546\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Mayor-Joseph-A-Curtatone.jpeg\" alt=\"Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone<\/mark><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Councilor <strong>Jesse Clingan<\/strong>, one of the sponsors of the resolution, said:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAs a city, I think it\u2019s important we take a stand to protect indigenous rituals and religious rites as well as decreasing harms caused in the name of the so called war on drugs.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThis is just another tool in the tool box in terms of what we have available, to help with many of the afflictions that are affecting society today.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-legal-limitations\"><em>Legal Limitations <\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the vote to decriminalise is not without its legal limitations. Like the others before them, Somerville still <strong>does not allow<\/strong> the selling of natural psychedelics. (Photo courtesy: City Council website)<\/mark><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>This means that Somerville police are not to use city resources in arresting those found to be using <em>(or holding)<\/em> entheogenic plants and fungi. That being said, U.S. federal law \u2014 which trumps any state or city law \u2014 still bans the growth and cultivation of psilocybin mushrooms if you don\u2019t have a <strong>special license<\/strong> from the DEA.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-in-a-much-better-place-mentally\"><em> \u201cIn a Much Better Place Mentally\u201d <\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alex Karasik<\/strong>, a 31-year-old resident of Somerville, shared his testimony with the city council before the vote.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI was nearly killed in a robbery in Chicago four years ago, and I was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder as a result. And a lot of my life plans were derailed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThrough a combination of therapy and psilocybin mushrooms, over time I have overcome my experience, and I\u2019m happy to say that I\u2019m in a much better place mentally.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Success stories like Mr. Karasik\u2019s are becoming more and more widespread  now, and they will only help to continue the march towards legalisation. <\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI had a profound experience. Immediately after, I felt that a lot had been repaired in a short time. I respect this substance and what it does.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-decriminalize-nature\"><em>Decriminalize Nature <\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Scientific studies on the benefits of psychedelics go a <em>long<\/em> way towards legal arguments. Various advocacy groups in the Somerville area, such as Bay Staters of Natural Medicine, Heroic Hearts Project, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/articles\/psychedelic-culture\/decriminalize-nature-the-organisation-changing-the-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Decriminalize Nature Massachusetts<\/a><\/strong>, sent a letter to city council.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAs our community confronts record-shattering opioid abuse, depression, and suicide, decriminalisation represents a huge step forward for public health and criminal justice.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"635\" height=\"283\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/microdose-3.jpg\" alt=\"hand holding one tiny mushroom\" class=\"wp-image-159819\" style=\"width:841px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/microdose-3.jpg 635w, https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/microdose-3-300x134.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/microdose-3-18x8.jpg 18w, https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/microdose-3-600x267.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 635px) 100vw, 635px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color\">via Unsplash<\/mark><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cDesignated a \u2018breakthrough therapy\u2019 by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), psilocybin mushrooms and other natural psychedelics are profoundly effective in treating these ailments.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>The letter also mentioned other U.S. cities and states that had already decriminalised psychedelic plants and fungi. Eight state lawmakers also promised to treat controlled substances as an<em> \u201cissue of public health\u201d<\/em>, not of public safety.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-science-is-undeniable\"><em> The Science is Undeniable <\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>The Somerville vote \u2014 and many others like it \u2014 is a huge step forward to repair the damage caused by heavy-handed drug laws.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Tons of scientific studies are finally showing the world just how powerful psychedelic experiences can be. Not just for leisure, mind you \u2014 but for treating mental health issues such as depression and addiction. These problems have become especially common during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/2020\/12\/coronavirus-is-taking-heavy-toll-america-mental-health-care-deserts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COVID-19 lockdowns<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Now, it\u2019s up to our lawmakers to see that the writing\u2019s on the wall.
