Aliens? Wizards? Pssh.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what if it\u2019s true? Do we live in a holographic universe?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-the-holographic-universe\"><em>The Holographic Universe <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Quick Physics lesson!&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/_UiV-TjfxOAlSRAKsSQgvjJ_gcq4Z-14KfZP0ZY7O47XI7rkLFEdIGlGzsgz9Vn0ekkO7ti2o-Y7l_kNeAAAOYT_lQLMVRMwAfr5S8zhZmvOskpZSoQqS7nd4vy8TMd7VNgNqaJL\" alt=\"\" width=\"843\" height=\"469\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The world you know has three dimensions of <strong>space<\/strong> <em>(up or down, left or right, forward or back)<\/em> and one of<strong> time<\/strong> <em>(past or future).<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s where it gets trippy. In 1997, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Juan_Mart%C3%ADn_Maldacena\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Juan Maldacena<\/a><\/strong> theorised that the universe is just one big movie screen of sorts. A<strong> holographic projection <\/strong>in <em>nine<\/em> dimensions of space <em>(plus one of time)<\/em>. The things around us are merely<em> \u201cvibrations\u201d<\/em> on thin, invisible strings \u2014 and thanks to gravity, the illusion is super convincing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if we\u2019re in a hologram, then where\u2019s the real action? According to Maldacena, it would have to be somewhere with no gravity \u2014 a flat cosmos. For years, scientists argued that this theory was crazy. <em>\u201cWhere\u2019s the proof, Maldacena?\u201d<\/em>, they said. (via NASA)\u00a0<\/mark><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_hole\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;Black holes<\/a> <\/strong>are \u201choles\u201d in space where the gravity is so strong, it sucks everything that comes near \u2014 so not even light can escape it. And if something <em>does <\/em>enter it <em>(like a rocket ship, for example)<\/em>, the object will be crushed into invisible bits. These flattened bits are then preserved as an \u201cimage\u201d at the edge of the black hole. Like a living snapshot, or a hologram.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if we could stretch out that idea? Not just at the event horizon, but for the universe beyond the black hole? Maybe the 3D objects we see are really placed on a faraway <em>2D surface<\/em> \u2014 and we\u2019re just interacting with a moving snapshot. An illusion, if you will.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(*Remember! Black holes have super strong gravity, which makes things seem \u201creal\u201d. But if we\u2019re in a hologram, then the real universe should have <strong>zero gravity<\/strong>\u2026 So to prove it, the energy between the Holo-world and the Actual-world must match.)&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-a-hologram-for-the-king\"><em>A Hologram for the King<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a 2014 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nature.2013.14328\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a><\/strong> by <strong>Yoshifumi Hyakutake<\/strong> and his team, they first computed the energy of what\u2019s inside a black hole and its event horizon. Next, he and his team solved for the energy of a lower-dimension with no gravity, using a computer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guess what? <strong>The two calculations match.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This suggests a holographic universe&#8230;as reflected on invisible, vibrating strings. And we\u2019re not the Actual-world in this case, because we have gravity, right? Which means\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Jeezus!&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/EbGVh-YD2al0jeAzEBNWUmYAHlUGC3A_grNAjauCp_wgmJg2nO4rAo3APIoXIfbbUMQpmtcyqkqRhQPWRFQhE-fgzaABsjKIrvdDM0NMHB6LWGaKLkHuxsfHXnmjZnrvP_H4x47D\" alt=\"\" width=\"838\" height=\"360\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-dual-nature-of-universes\"><em>Dual Nature of Universes <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The 1997 theorist Maldacena, who was not part of the team\u2019s work, was stoked by the results: <em>\u201cIt seems to be a correct computation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe whole sequence of papers is very nice because it tests the <\/em><strong><em>dual [nature of universes] <\/em><\/strong><em>in regimes where there are no analytic tests.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Leonard_Susskind\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leonard Susskind<\/a><\/strong>, a theoretical physicist at Stanford University who helped start the Holographic Principle, said:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThey have <\/em><strong><em>numerically confirmed<\/em><\/strong><em>, perhaps for the first time, something we were fairly sure had to be true, but was still a [guess] \u2014 namely that the thermodynamics of certain black holes can be [copied] from a lower-dimensional universe.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s still no <em>definitive<\/em> proof that our universe is merely a copy. The only way to check for sure is to jump out of Holo-World and into the Actual-World&#8230;and we haven\u2019t quite figured out how to do it yet ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-still-very-much-real\"><em>Still Very Much Real <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/JPFj9zbhmtZstuzoEYCLzprN31w2qu7PNZ05V_tkIis_tSyKlUURCDBfol03wFT5STp_u9El8J6wtPvRn31HnbNWzOq6I3byimcpE86Ph6QnRzAqXjozpchAFpvSzKCA9iVZuf36\" alt=\"\" width=\"838\" height=\"633\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So there you have it! As you may have figured out by now, the <strong>Holographic Theory<\/strong> means that the three-dimensional universe we\u2019re in is a <em>projected image<\/em> of a two-dimensional one&#8230; NOT that we\u2019re living in a simulation, Matrix-style. The people you love, the snacks you enjoy \u2014 these earthly delights are still very much real. Phew!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think about it this way. When you trip on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wiki\/mycology\/what-is-psilocybin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">psilocybin<\/a><\/strong> from magic mushrooms and truffles, you go on a psychedelic journey into the mind. Can you glimpse your possible futures, all branching out? If so, that means you have agency: the ability to make decisions as you wish. And guess what?
