So, if residents are caught in public on a shroom trip with their buddies, they will neither be detained nor arrested by the Seattle police. There\u2019s a bit of a catch, though&#8230; The use of psychedelics has to be strictly <em>\u2018non-commercial\u2019<\/em>. You can\u2019t ever sell it, but you <em>can<\/em> share it with some friends!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"382\" height=\"286\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Lewis-Swearing-I.jpeg\" alt=\"Councilman Andrew J. Lewis <\/mark><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In a press release, <strong>Andrew J. Lewis<\/strong>, the councilmember who introduced the resolution, said that arresting users of psychedelics is among Seattle\u2019s <em>\u2018lowest law enforcement priorities\u2019<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIt is a long overdue conversation to decriminalise these non-addictive natural substances. Our law enforcement officials certainly have <\/em><strong><em>more important things to do than arrest people<\/em><\/strong><em> for possession of entheogens, and this resolution affirms that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><em>Emerging Medical Research <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lewis also emphasised the <strong>life-saving potential<\/strong> of psychedelics when used together with therapy. A few months ago, he had gathered several experts, scientists, doctors, lawyers, and people who had experienced the effectiveness of psychedelics firsthand. The response? It was time for Seattle to stop treating psychedelic use as a crime \u2014 and to change the legal penalties right away.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Said Lewis:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cA community conversation&#8230;to reconcile government policy with <\/em><strong><em>emerging medical research<\/em><\/strong><em> regarding potential benefits of psychedelics is already well-underway.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIn a medically-appropriate and supervised environment, <\/em><strong><em>people who have experienced severe trauma could benefit<\/em><\/strong><em> from these substances. We need to join the national conversation.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Magic mushrooms and magic truffles, which contain the psychoactive compound <strong>psilocybin<\/strong> \u2014 and other entheogens have proven themselves to be very effective in treating a host of conditions. Clinical trials have shown that taking psychedelics along with <strong>talk therapy<\/strong> could help patients struggling with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/articles\/psychedelic-studies\/psilocybin-grows-new-neural-conections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">severe depression<\/a><\/strong>,  PTSD, addiction, grief, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/articles\/psychedelic-culture\/more-canadians-granted-psilocybin-for-end-of-life-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">end-of-life anxiety<\/a>,<\/strong> and even <em>cure<\/em> them in some cases.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Could psychedelics be the key to finally solving the mental health crisis in America? This crucial question could be answered even within the next few years!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><em>The Seattle Guarantee<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1-1-2.png\" alt=\"shrooma waving\" class=\"wp-image-161003\" style=\"width:407px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1-1-2.png 500w, https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1-1-2-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1-1-2-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1-1-2-12x12.png 12w, https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1-1-2-100x100.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color\">The vote to decriminalise entheogens in Seattle was a unanimous YES. <\/mark><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Cops in Seattle are no longer expected to detain or arrest those who use natural psychedelics in a <strong>\u2018social sharing\u2019,<\/strong><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><em>free love<\/em> type of situation \u2014 not even to confiscate them. There are certain exceptions to the rule, however. The Seattle Police Department (SPD) is still authorized to arrest or sue those caught:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Holding or cultivating entheogens in a manner that poses a clear risk to oneself and others;\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Trading entheogens in a transaction which involves money <em>(aka <strong>\u201ccommercial use\u201d<\/strong>)<\/em>, even if the drugs are used in a religious, spiritual, healing, or personal growth setting; and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Scoring mescaline by harvesting <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peyote\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">peyote<\/a><\/strong>, a cactus that grows only in Mexico and parts of the American Southwest. In Mexico, only Indigenous people can harvest it legally. Peyote matures very slowly, and has become even more \u201cvulnerable\u201d due to forbidden harvesting by tourists.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What makes decriminalising the use of psychedelics different from \u2018legalising\u2019 it? In the case of Seattle, even though local police won\u2019t detain or arrest those caught with magic mushrooms, ayahuasca, and other such entheogens \u2014 this so-called <em>\u2018free pass\u2019 <\/em>is <strong>not formally written as departmental policy<\/strong>. In other words, you\u2019re free to get trippy on shrooms *only* if you don\u2019t sell or buy it. For more than two years now, members of the group <strong>Decriminalize Nature Seattle (<a href=\"https:\/\/decriminalizenatureseattle.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DNS<\/a>)<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/decriminalizenatureseattle.org\/\"> <\/a>have urged the council to stop the arrests of those who cultivate and share entheogens. And after they sent in a draft ordinance to Lewis last May, the group\u2019s efforts have finally borne fruit. <strong>Kody Zaleski<\/strong>, DNS co-director and chair of policy and research, shared her joy after the vote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWe\u2019re happy that our years of effort have paid off in making this a reality. This is only the very beginning of conducting a much larger push to <\/em><strong><em>expand access to psychedelic medicine<\/em><\/strong><em> across Washington state\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cPublic opinion is changing, and <\/em><strong><em>many people are waking up<\/em><\/strong><em> to the fact that the War on Drugs leads to unnecessary incarceration, [blocks] access to profoundly effective medicine, and [affects] both religious freedom and personal liberty.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cSocial progress rarely happens through sweeping changes, but rather occurs from <\/em><strong><em>winning one small battle at a time.<\/em><\/strong><em>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><em>A Significant Difference in People\u2019s Lives <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to the unanimous 9-0 vote in favor of psychedelic use, Lewis spoke to the council once more about why Seattle should take entheogens seriously:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThese non-addictive natural substances have real potential in clinical and therapeutic settings to make a <\/em><strong><em>really significant difference in people\u2019s lives<\/em><\/strong><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThis resolution really sets the stage as the first significant action in the state of Washington to move this policy forward.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><em>An End to the Opioid Crisis? <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We hear all about Silicon Valley tech giants who <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/articles\/psychedelic-culture\/how-magic-mushrooms-help-you-become-an-entreprenuer\/\">microdose psychedelics<\/a><\/strong> for creative inspiration \u2014 and it\u2019s hardly surprising. After all, law enforcement is less likely to chase down Elon Musk if he ever tries magic truffles in public. It\u2019s a lot harder for ordinary citizens to enjoy a shroom trip outdoors in places where it\u2019s not yet decriminalised.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is part of the reason why Lewis wants to explore ways to<em> \u201creduce social inequity\u201d<\/em>. So that those who need psychedelics for mental health, like the ones hit hardest by the devastating U.S. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugabuse.gov\/drug-topics\/opioids\/opioid-overdose-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">opioid crisis<\/a><\/strong>, <em>can<\/em> have access to them regardless of wealth or status. Here&#8217;s an example. Did you know that <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25586396\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">five weeks worth of psilocybin<\/a><\/strong> can spell the difference between alcohol addiction and a new, sober life? Who doesn\u2019t love a <em>hot cuppa in the rain-a?<\/em> And today, the Emerald City joins a growing number of U.S. parts which have decriminalised some or all entheogens. A psychedelic <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/articles\/psychedelic-culture\/psychedelic-renaissance-and-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New Wave<\/a><\/strong> of sorts that includes the state of Oregon; Washington, D.C.; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Denver, Colorado; and Santa Cruz and Oakland, both in California.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the rate America is going, will it soon join the ranks of Brazil, Jamaica, Portugal, and the Netherlands? Talk about going red, white, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/psychedelicreview.com\/blue-bruising-psilocybin-mushroom-bluing-reaction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">psilocybin blue<\/a>!<\/strong> Who wouldn\u2019t love to live in a psychedelic mecca where one is free to share and enjoy magic truffles <em>(and other entheogens)<\/em> to your heart&#8217;s content<em>\u2026?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The perfect way to spend a rainy Seattle day!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do you love psychedelics?
