Thankfully, our psychedelic cousins in counterculture \u2014 <em>los primos de marijuana<\/em> \u2014 are celebrating a legendary annual \u201choliday\u201d for all things cannabis. And everyone is welcome to join in the fun! Today, weed enthusiasts from all corners of the world shall be rolling a fat joint in honour of <strong>420<\/strong>, aka the \u201cStoner\u2019s New Year\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-420\">What is 420?<\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s 420 celebration comes right at the heels of Easter, the perfect time to hunt for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/blog\/how-to-hunt-for-psychic-easter-eggs-with-magic-mushrooms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>psychic easter eggs<\/b><\/a>. As for the name of the holiday itself? 420 is in reference to the date of the occasion that takes place each year on April 20th. The annual event serves a dual purpose. The first being that of a 24-hour long toast to cannabis, while at the same time lobbying for it to be legalised in places where it\u2019s still banned.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>But for the majority of the doobie-toting crowd, 420 is not defined by lively protests on the streets. Nor do they really have to, anyway, since marijuana has been <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/identities\/2018\/8\/20\/17938336\/marijuana-legalization-states-map\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">legal<\/a><\/strong> in most of the U.S. since 2012. Instead, cannabis-lovers see 420 as the day to have some serious fun. To break free from the shackles of mainstream rules <em>(which suck hard, maaan!)<\/em>. And to get kushy by altering your usual state of mind. That was the point.\u201d \u2014 Former U.S. President Barack Obama on his days as a blunt-rollin\u2019 college student via Creative Commons<\/mark><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Origin of 420<\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>The term 420 first became popular in the 1970s <em>(yes, that far back!)<\/em> with pot dealers and users saying it to each other as an inside joke. An open secret that no one\u2019s really sure what it means, from a word-choice point of view. For all intents and purposes, the memetic use of 420 as a phrase evolved to become a legit urban myth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Attorney <strong>Keith Stroup<\/strong>, executive director of the National Organization to Reform Marijuana Laws <strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/norml.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NORML<\/a>)<\/strong>, told sfgate.com about 420\u2019s lasting contribution to counterculture:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt has become a giant urban myth and it\u2019s a lot of fun. Folks who smoke [weed] have a lot of fun with this code word, and the rest of the country doesn\u2019t know what the hell we\u2019re talking about.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Some theories suggest that 420 is code among cops for \u201cactive marijuana use nearby\u201d. Others say that 420 is the best day to get high because it\u2019s also Adolf Hitler\u2019s birthday <em>(heil = high. Get it?)<\/em>. Either way, these theories and many others are blazingly false.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>The <em>real<\/em> designers of the now-classic catchphrase are not the CIA, nor any other shadow government task force. Believe it or not, the most credible sources point toward five Californian high school students in the 1970s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Behold the founding fathers of 420: <strong>Steve Capper<\/strong>, <strong>Mark Gravich<\/strong>, <strong>Jeffrey Noel<\/strong>,<strong> Dave Reddix<\/strong>, and <strong>Larry Schwartz<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where\u2019s Waldos? <\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>In 1971, these five students from San Rafael High School were nicknamed the <strong>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/420waldos.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Waldos<\/a>\u201d<\/strong> by their peers, because of their habit of smoking pot against a wall. How did this ragtag group of weed-seekers manage to sneak around so effortlessly in the rule-bound halls of high school? At a period when using cannabis <em>(or any psychedelic substance really)<\/em> was, well, against the rules?<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>For the Waldos it was as easy as rolling a joint. With the help of a secret code, the five young men would \u201cbump\u201d into each other in the hallways, and decide to slack off and smoke pot. Sure, people overheard, but did they understand?<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c420 Louis.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAight, dude. 420!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>The Waldos would then gather at 4:20 PM behind the statue of Old Louis Pasteur to smoke marijuana. Their teachers were none the wiser.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Memories of Mischief <\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Decades later, \u201cWaldo\u201d <strong>Steve Capper<\/strong> would recount their danger days with fondness to <em>The Huffington Post<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI could say to one of my friends, I\u2019d go, \u2018420\u2019 and it was telepathic. He would know if I was saying, \u2018Hey, do you wanna go smoke some?\u2019 Or, \u2018Do you have any?\u2019 Or, \u2018Are you stoned right now?\u2019 It was kind of telepathic just from the way you said it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOur teachers didn\u2019t know what we were talking about. Can you imagine catching five Waldos? The school authorities were in the weeds for years. The whole shebang was a point of high honour <em>(wink, wink)<\/em> for the group, as Waldo Steve said:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe have proof, we were the first. I mean, it\u2019s not like we wrote a book or invented anything. We just came up with a phrase. But it\u2019s kind of an honour that this emanated from San Rafael.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Waldo Dreams of Doobie<\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Time magazine, \u201cWaldo\u201d <strong>Dave Reddix<\/strong> revealed that cannabis helped them deal with feelings of alienation in high school:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe got tired of the Friday night football scene with all the jocks. We were the guys sitting under the stands smoking a doobie, wondering what we were doing there.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>The Waldos then heard a rumour about an abandoned cannabis crop, unkempt yet still alive, close to Point Reyes Peninsula Coast Guard Station. The years came and went. And after seeing 420 take root in the American consciousness and be used by money-making ads, the Waldos decided to settle the score once and for all. They called <em>High Times<\/em> editor Steven Hager and showed him a bunch of well-preserved<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/420waldos.com\/documented-proof\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">letters<\/a><\/strong> postmarked from the 70s \u2014 chock-full of snickering mentions of 420.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>The mystery was now solved.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Marijuana and the Mystical Experience<\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>One thing that unites cannabis with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wiki\/mycology\/what-is-psilocybin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>psilocybin<\/b><\/a>, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, is the ability to ease symptoms of severe&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/blog\/microdosing-shrooms-for-social-anxiety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>anxiety<\/b><\/a>. Marijuana acts as a \u201cbooster\u201d that intensifies the unique psychedelic trip of each substance!<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c[Mixing marijuana with psychedelics was] associated with higher scores of mystical-type experiences, ego-dissolution, and visual alterations.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Basically, the more cannabis a person said they used at the same time, the more intense the psychedelic effect of psilocybin, LSD, etc, will be!<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201c&#8230;some individuals may use cannabis in an attempt to <\/em><strong><em>alter effects or experiences<\/em><\/strong><em> [triggered] by the psychedelic, in the same way that some cannabis users report using cannabis to \u2018self-medicate\u2019 for psychiatric symptoms.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Mellow High<\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s worth noting, though, that when taken on its own, a full-on dose of cannabis only produces a <em>mellow high<\/em>, or at most a feeling of oceanic boundlessness. Marijuana-induced highs are seldom reliable or strong enough to cause a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/blog\/what-is-ego-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>breakdown of the ego<\/b><\/a>, which is a hallmark of classic psychedelics such as psilocybin and LSD.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a reason why the stoner archetype is characterised by their relaxed, chilled-out persona, with a tendency to \u201chang loose\u201d via creative daydreaming. In contrast, there is a growing number of people who <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wiki\/psilocybin-microdosing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">microdose truffles<\/a><\/strong> to help power through a busy workday.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Of course, these are just pop culture stereotypes. The real effects of recreational drugs will always vary depending on the person who takes them!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Shrooms: A Dope Alternative to Cannabis?<\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Recent data from the Global Drug Survey have shown that magic mushrooms are the safest recreational drug to take. (Photo via Wholecelium)<\/mark><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Based on the reported drug habits of over 120,000 users in 50 countries, only <strong>0.2 percent<\/strong> of shroom and magic truffle users had to go to hospital. Marijuana users, on the other hand, had <strong>0.6 percent<\/strong> who had to seek medical attention.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Psilocybin, the active ingredient in shrooms and magic truffles, has <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2017\/may\/29\/safe-magic-mushrooms-psilocybin-drug-depression-illegal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no lethal dose<\/a><\/strong>, as reported in <em>The Guardian<\/em>. This is why tech geniuses in Silicon Valley, and now working class folks like us, have been taking small doses <em>(aka \u201cmicrodoses\u201d)<\/em> of psilocybin to be more productive at work. New research has also shown that psilocybin can help erase the symptoms of depression for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/blog\/study-shows-psilocybin-can-relieve-major-depression-for-a-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>at least a year<\/b><\/a>, without the risk of addictive side effects as mainstream antidepressants.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>To compare, recreational marijuana has been legalised in 18 states and Washington, DC, for adults over the age of 21. Then there\u2019s 38 states and DC which have legalised <em>medical<\/em> marijuana. Though not as viscerally trippy as shrooms, cannabis is still calming and harmless for the most part.
