But there\u2019s another dimension that\u2019s been getting serious scientific attention: <strong>their potential to enhance emotional closeness and relationship wellbeing<\/strong>. Especially when used thoughtfully in a therapeutic setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A new systematic review, published in the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/02791072.2025.2577311\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Journal of Psychoactive Drugs<\/a><\/em>, pulls together decades of research and offers a clearer picture: psychedelics <em>may<\/em> increase empathy, connection, and relationship satisfaction\u2026 but <strong>only under the right conditions<\/strong>. In contrast, recreational use <em>(especially unguided) <\/em>comes with real risks, including disconnection and strain in relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study was led by <strong>Anna Bradford<\/strong>, a psychological counseling master\u2019s candidate at Columbia University; <strong>Ethan Freedman<\/strong>, a master of social work candidate at Columbia University; and <strong>Rachel E. Dinero<\/strong>, associate professor of psychology at Le Moyne College. Together, this interdisciplinary team sought to understand whether psychedelic-assisted treatments could genuinely help people build healthier relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"637\" height=\"372\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/psychedelics-romance-relatioships.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-259144\" style=\"width:800px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/psychedelics-romance-relatioships.jpg 637w, https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/psychedelics-romance-relatioships-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/psychedelics-romance-relatioships-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/psychedelics-romance-relatioships-600x350.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 637px) 100vw, 637px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As they explained to <em>PsyPost<\/em>:<br><strong><em>\u201cOur backgrounds collectively include counseling, human sexuality, attachment, public health, and pharmaceutical intervention effectiveness\u2026 We were collectively intrigued with the possible role that pharmaceutical intervention, specifically psychedelic drugs, might have in improving relationships outcomes.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-emotional-connection-matters\"><strong>Why Emotional Connection Matters<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers grounded their investigation in a simple truth: <strong>our relationships shape our health<\/strong>. Loneliness increases mortality risk as much as smoking or obesity. Emotional intimacy \u2014 being seen, understood, and open with another person \u2014 is a key ingredient of wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the question becomes: <em>Can psychedelics help people access that openness more easily?<\/em> The review suggests\u2026 yes, but with a few caveats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-massive-search-narrowed-to-19-key-studies\"><strong>A Massive Search, Narrowed to 19 Key Studies<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The team combed through <strong>7 major academic databases<\/strong>, searching for studies involving substances like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wiki\/mycology\/what-is-psilocybin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">psilocybin<\/a>, MDMA, LSD, ayahuasca, and ketamine. After screening <strong>5,902 articles<\/strong>, they distilled the list to <strong>19 studies<\/strong> that directly measured intimacy-related outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These fell into two main categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-controlled-laboratory-studies-9-studies\"><strong>1. Controlled laboratory studies <em>(9 studies)<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers administered psychedelics in clinical environments, often using placebo-controlled designs, aka <em>the gold standard.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-naturalistic-recreational-studies-10-studies\"><strong>2. It&#8217;s a Little More Complicated<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the ten naturalistic studies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Six<\/strong> reported positive outcomes like deep emotional connection, empathy, and post-ceremony <em>\u201ccommunitas\u201d<\/em>\u2014that powerful feeling of unity that can last for weeks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Four<\/strong>, however, described notable <em>negative<\/em> impacts on intimacy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-when-things-went-wrong\"><strong>When Things Went Wrong<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Some participants reported:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>social withdrawal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>increased anxiety<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>distrust of others<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>communication breakdowns<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>One chemsex study found that although some participants felt temporarily closer during drug-influenced sexual encounters, many experienced <strong>long-term damage to intimate relationships<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another study noted that difficult psychedelic experiences without guidance led to lingering feelings of judgment, isolation, and emotional \u201cshutdown.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:13px\">*<em>Of course, there are also many couples who anecdotally report that psychedelics greatly enhance their relationships in recreational settings, reflecting the 6\/10 positive outcome in the study. When that openness is held by a skilled facilitator, it can heal. Emotional intimacy thrives on <strong>openness<\/strong>, the ability to share internal worlds honestly and empathetically. Psychedelics appear to temporarily soften defenses, making that kind of openness more accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But openness without safety is vulnerability without support.<br>And <em>that\u2019s<\/em> where things can break down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clinical environments provide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>grounding<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>guidance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>integration support<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ethical safeguards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Without those, people may confront emotional material they\u2019re not prepared to handle \u2014 alone or in unstable social situations. The review makes clear: <strong>psychedelics do not automatically make relationships healthier<\/strong>.
