World War I broke out, and so the rules of society loosened out of necessity. Women took on jobs as drivers, farmers, mechanics; formerly just for men. But for now we shall focus on a secret dinner party\u2026 with Mr. W., a middle-aged botanist, deeply curious about fungi; Mrs. Y, his niece by marriage; and her husband, Mr.Y. Care to guess their savoury <em>main dish<\/em>? That\u2019s right, magic mushrooms!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Article writer A.E. Verrill goes on to say that the effects were <em>\u201csimilar to those caused by <\/em><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hashish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hashish<\/a><\/em><\/strong><em>\u201d<\/em> or those experienced by some <strong>opium<\/strong> smokers, such as the<em> \u201cmultiplication of objects and their bright colors\u201d<\/em>. Sounds familiar, huh?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:28px\"><em>\u201cThe appearance of vivid colors recalls\u2026 Dr. Weir Mitchell, when he took Mexican mescal pills, as an experiment. The loss of the power of estimating <\/em><em>time and distance<\/em><em>, as in some dreams, is interesting\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-a-good-mess-of-mushrooms\"><em>A Good Mess of Mushrooms <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>And so began the night\u2019s festivities for Mr. W and company:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cOn July 10, 1914, I gathered a good mess of the mushrooms (Panaeolus papilionaceus) and had them cooked for dinner. There may have been about a pound of them as gathered, but when fried in butter they made no great quantity, owing to their softness and delicate structure.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mushrooms were all eaten by Mr. W and his niece, Mrs. Y. According to the botanist, the effects set in <em>quickly<\/em>. He could not collect his thoughts easily, nor join in conversation. Couldn\u2019t get up from his chair quickly, either. So he walked for a bit \u2014 and <strong>time played its tricks<\/strong> on the gentleman:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe time was short, but seemed long drawn out; could walk straight but seemed drowsy; had no disagreeable stomach sensations, effects seemed entirely mental\u2026 Mrs. Y was in about the same condition, according to Mr. Y&#8230;\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The botanist walked with Mr. Y. to clear his mind. Rather intoxicated, in his own words. But things began to seem funny:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cA little later objects took on <\/em><strong><em>peculiar bright colors.<\/em><\/strong><em> A field of redtop grass seemed to be in horizontal stripes of bright red and green\u2026&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cAt this time Mrs. Y saw nearly everything green, but the sky was blue; her white handkerchief appeared green to her; and the tips of her fingers seemed to be like the <\/em><strong><em>heads of snakes<\/em><\/strong><em>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-downton-shroomy\"><em>Downton Shroomy<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:28px\"><em>\u201cNext, say about half an hour after eating, both of us had an irresistible impulse to run and jump,<\/em><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><em>which we did freely.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The botanist did not stagger, as he recalled, but his motions seemed to be <em>\u201cmechanical or automatic\u201d<\/em>. His muscles did not fully obey his will. Was it fatigue from a day&#8217;s work? Or a mild case of <strong>out-of-body shenanigans<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cSoon both of us became very hilarious&#8230;We were indulging extravagantly in joking and what seemed to us <\/em><em>funny or witty remarks<\/em><em>. Mr. Y., who was with us, said that some of the jokes were successful; others not so., but I can not remember what they were about.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-jack-s-bean-stalk\"><em>Jack\u2019s Bean-Stalk <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The trip had gotten so vivid, it scared Mr W out of his wits. So he asked Mr. Y to go fetch a doctor:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI had the unpleasant sensation of having my body elongate upward to the ceiling, which receding, <\/em><strong><em>I grew far up<\/em><\/strong><em>, like Jack\u2019s bean-stalk, but retained my natural thickness. Collapsed suddenly to my natural height.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr. W. then tried to play the parlor organ, but couldn\u2019t manage his fingers. He then described the <strong>next stage<\/strong> of his shroom trip as being <em>\u201cchaotic\u201d<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThere was a partial and brief loss of consciousness. Laid down to wait for the doctor. Looking at my hands, they seemed to become small, emaciated, shrunken and bony,<\/em><strong><em> like those of a mummy<\/em><\/strong><em>. Mrs. Y. says that&#8230;her hands and arms seemed to grow unnaturally large.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(Sounds like you guys hit the psilocybin motherlode there&#8230;)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-a-sort-of-clairvoyance\"><em> A Sort of Clairvoyance <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Already sounds pretty nuts for a dinner party? Wait till you hear Mr. W.\u2019s pi\u00e8ce de r\u00e9sistance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cLater I imagined I was able, by a sort of <\/em><strong><em>clairvoyance<\/em><\/strong><em>, to tell the thoughts of those around me. Soon after this our conditions [went back to] the very hilarious phase\u2026with much involuntary laughing and joking.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mind-reading? Perfect! ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe entire experience lasted <\/em><strong><em>about six hours<\/em><\/strong><em>. No ill effects followed. There was no headache, nor any disturbance of the digestion.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-1914-the-age-of-morphine-and-morpheus\"><em>1914: The Age of Morphine and Morpheus <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the article, Mr. W.\u2019s dinner party lived on as the <strong>earliest, most detailed report<\/strong> of magic mushroom use \u2014 at least within the monied classes. <em>High society,<\/em> indeed! As for its scientific accuracy? Psychedelic hero <strong>Paul Stamets<\/strong> had but one nitpick in his 1996 book, <em>Psilocybin Mushrooms of the World<\/em>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe mushrooms may have been incorrectly identified, and could have been <\/em><em>Panaeolus subbalteatus<\/em><em>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can\u2019t really blame Mr. W. for any errors in labelling. His dinner party was, after all, the first recorded shroom trip in U.S. history. The only caveat? Many veterans ended up with an addiction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was the only <em>truly<\/em> effective painkiller, as one soldier spoke of his comrade: <em>\u201cthe relief-giving little needle is inserted in his arm, and blessed morphia gives him sleep.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-what-about-psilocybin\"><em>What About Psilocybin? <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Psilocybin<\/strong>, the trippy compound in magic mushrooms and truffles, is safe and non-habit forming. How so? Its base chemical, <strong>psilocin<\/strong>, simply lacks the addictive traits of opioids <em>(to which morphine belongs)<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, the U.S. is on its way to decriminalise psilocybin \u2014 as medicine!
