What if psychedelic substances such as <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wiki\/mycology\/what-is-psilocybin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>psilocybin<\/b><\/a><strong>\u00a0and LSD, are <em>not<\/em> the root cause of crime<\/strong>? <strong>What if they might actually help to keep ex-offenders out of prison?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>So, let\u2019s take a look back at the research<strong> <\/strong>that changed how we see criminal justice and positive psychology. We&#8217;ll <em>also<\/em> take a peek and the role hallucinogens could play in helping to curb criminal behaviour\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-shrooms-and-lsd-can-help-to-prevent-crime\">Shrooms and LSD Can Help to Prevent Crime <\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>In a 2014 <strong>study<\/strong> published in the <em>Journal of Psychopharmacology<\/em>, scientists from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and the University of Alabama at Birmingham found that hallucinogenic drugs, such as magic mushrooms and LSD, may be key to stopping criminals from reoffending <em>(known as<\/em> <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Recidivism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recidivism<\/a><\/strong>)<\/em>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Magnifying-glass-1-15.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-161470\" style=\"width:433px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Magnifying-glass-1-15.png 1000w, https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Magnifying-glass-1-15-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Magnifying-glass-1-15-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Magnifying-glass-1-15-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Magnifying-glass-1-15-12x12.png 12w, https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Magnifying-glass-1-15-600x600.png 600w, https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Magnifying-glass-1-15-100x100.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color\">Hallucinogens such as psilocybin from magic mushrooms, and LSD, may help to reduce crime rates in high level areas. <\/mark><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Previous studies had shown that psilocybin and LSD could be effective in treating&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/blog\/microdosing-psilocybin-for-alcoholism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>alcohol addiction<\/b><\/a>. However, this new trial is the first in 40 years to show that psychedelics could be used to help reform criminals. Specifically those who are on parole, under community supervision, or allowed to live and work in the community rather than being incarcerated.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>In the study, the researchers wrote:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOur results provide a notable exception to the robust positive link between substance use and criminal behaviour.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>They also pointed out that the current legal opinion of psychedelics as \u2018harmful\u2019 has \u2014 <em>get this<\/em> \u2014 no scientific basis whatsoever!<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThey add to both the older and emerging body of data indicating <\/em><strong><em>beneficial effects of hallucinogen interventions<\/em><\/strong><em> and run counter to the legal classification as well as popular perception of hallucinogens as categorically harmful substances with no therapeutic potential.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Less Likely to Get Arrested<\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>For the study, the researchers gathered data from around <strong>25,622 <\/strong>individuals under parole or community supervision between 2002 and 2007. The factors included race, age, gender, education, employment, history of drug abuse, and crimes. But the most important detail was that:<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThey live in the community with family and friends, and continue to work and participate in society. This programme monitors people with a history of drug abuse, including addiction to alcohol. Those who fail the TASC programme are likely to commit the same crime <em>(or worse)<\/em>. Then they get arrested again, and return to jail.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>The scientists found a curious pattern in criminals who only dabbled with trippy substances, such as shrooms, truffles, and LSD. What gives? It was crystal clear: the criminals diagnosed with a <strong>hallucinogen use <\/strong>disorder<strong> <\/strong>were far less likely to fail the TASC programme. Thus they lowered the odds of them getting arrested and going back to prison.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Those who <em>did not<\/em> have a history of psychedelic use or only used hard drugs and alcohol, were much more likely to appear in court. Photo by Larry Farr on Unsplash<\/mark><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>See, the bulk of study participants <em>(around 99 percent)<\/em> were heavy users of alcohol, cannabis, and cocaine. Which implies that only one percent <em>(aka the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/blog\/what-is-a-psychonaut\/\">psychonauts<\/a><\/strong>) <\/em>were less likely to avoid crime while out of jail. This led to the theory that if one takes shrooms, magic truffles, and LSD regularly over the years, it can greatly reduce (<em>or even eliminate!<\/em>) the cravings for hard drugs and impulsive conduct.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThey demonstrate that, in a real-world, substance-related intervention setting, hallucinogen use is associated with a <\/em><strong><em>lower probability of poor outcome.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe believe this calls for the continued scientific investigation of this unique class of substances.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Turning Over a New Leaf with Psychedelics <\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>The researchers wrote that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/blog\/study-shows-psilocybin-can-relieve-major-depression-for-a-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>psychedelic-based therapy<\/b><\/a>&nbsp;could work wonders on ex-criminals. It could help them to lead more peaceful and less impulse-driven lives outside of prison.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOffenders may be especially likely to benefit from <\/em><strong><em>hallucinogen treatment<\/em><\/strong><em> because involvement in the criminal justice system often results from [hard] drug-seeking behaviour and impulsive conduct [worsened] by compulsive substance use.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Taking psychedelics may also help these individuals to re-enter into society by encouraging warm and friendly relationships with their neighbours.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOur results suggest that hallucinogens may promote alcohol [and] drug abstinence and <\/em><strong><em>prosocial behaviour<\/em><\/strong><em> in a population with high rates of recidivism.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, there\u2019s always a second chance in life with psychedelics!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt seems appropriate to encourage [more trials] of <\/em><strong><em>hallucinogen-based therapies<\/em><\/strong><em> among those in the criminal justice system, who are among the most disadvantaged population in need of effective interventions worldwide.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rebirth and Redemption&nbsp;<\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sunrise-pink-and-blue-1.jpg\" alt=\"sun rise\n\" class=\"wp-image-161478\" style=\"width:840px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sunrise-pink-and-blue-1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sunrise-pink-and-blue-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sunrise-pink-and-blue-1-18x12.jpg 18w, https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sunrise-pink-and-blue-1-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color\">via Unsplash<\/mark><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Who knew that choosing to vibe only with psychedelics, such as shrooms could greatly reduce criminal behaviour? The study from these universities have proven that with the right tools and a strong support system, just about <em>anyone<\/em> can turn their life around.
