Not just the TV sitcom character but in real life, too! Here\u2019s the thing, though. What most fans don\u2019t realise is that Will Smith\u2019s larger-than-life comedic persona is just that: a <em>persona.<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an upcoming first memoir simply titled <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/lifestyle\/arts\/will-smith-to-release-memoir-1234970970\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Will<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, Smith gives us a peek behind the velvet curtain. What is it like to have a lost childhood riddled with pain and silence, with a secret trauma that still lingers 50 years on? And how did going to dozens of <strong>ayahuasca<\/strong> retreats in Peru help Will Smith conquer the pain?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\" id=\"h-the-fresh-prince-in-crisis\"><em>The Fresh Prince in Crisis<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As Will Smith approached his late 40s, all the glitz and the glamour lost their appeal to him. Make no mistake, the <em>Prince<\/em> was still filthy rich. But success in L.A. comes at a price \u2014 and he paid it by losing the affection of his family, one forgotten dinner at a time. He had lost sight of his life\u2019s purpose. At times such as these, there was really only one person Smith could call. He said, \u2018Listen. You\u2019ve got to think of it as the funky 40. Everybody\u2019s 40s are funky.\u2019 He said, \u2018But just wait till you hit the f***-it 50s.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201c[Denzel] said, \u2018Just bear with your 40s.\u2019&#8230;And that\u2019s exactly what happened. There was a strong sense of community \u2014 if only for the tightly-packed brick row houses. It wasn\u2019t too fancy to be honest, but as Smith shares in an excerpt from his memoir:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cFor a young Black family in the 1970s, this was as <\/em><strong><em>\u2018American Dream\u2019<\/em><\/strong><em> as you could get.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the age of nine, Will saw his father punch his mother in the side of the head. His brother Harry tried to defend their mom; while his sister ran and hid under the bed. As for Smith, he tells GQ that he was <em>\u201cfrozen\u201d<\/em> \u2014 too scared to even move. The incident, he writes, <em>\u201chas defined who I am today.\u201d <\/em>His father never talked about his violent tendencies, not even until he died in 2016. He <em>did <\/em>teach his son a <strong>sense of professionalism<\/strong>, Smith says. A must-have skill to survive <em>(much less succeed)<\/em> in Hollywood.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Writes Smith:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cMy father tormented me. And he was also one of the greatest men I\u2019ve ever known. He was<\/em><strong><em> one of the greatest blessings of my life, and also one of my greatest sources of pain.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><em>Will Smith\u2019s First Ayahuasca Trip <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith is now 53, and he\u2019s happier than ever. Is it safe to say that the midlife crisis is, erm, now <em>\u201ccrisis averted\u201d<\/em>? The actor tells GQ that he had taken Denzel Washington\u2019s advice to heart, and said \u201cf*** it\u201d. After much thought, Will Smith rented a house in Utah and <strong>lived alone for two weeks<\/strong>. He read, meditated, and sneaked around town without a bodyguard for the first time in decades. Even the crowds didn\u2019t recognise the Prince of Bel-Air in their midst. Can you imagine?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cSlumming\u201d<\/em> with non-celebrities didn\u2019t help in his quest for inner peace, however. So, Smith flew to Peru in search of answers in the form of a dozen <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/articles\/psychedelic-culture\/wiggert-meerman-in-search-of-ayahuasca\/\">ayahuasca rituals<\/a><\/strong>. In my fifty plus years on this planet, this is the unparalleled <\/em><strong><em>greatest feeling I\u2019ve ever had.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI totally opened myself up to what, I think, was a fresh sampling of the <\/em><strong><em>fruits of the human experience<\/em><\/strong><em>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><em>Psychedelics: So Hot Right Now <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from the hallucinogenic effects, what else can ayahuasca do to your brain? After all, even <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.etonline.com\/megan-fox-details-experience-drinking-hallucinogenic-ayahuasca-with-machine-gun-kelly-in-costa-rica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Megan Fox revealed<\/a><\/strong> on Jimmy Kimmel that she went on a 3-day Costa Rican ayahuasca retreat, with rapper boyfriend <strong>Machine Gun Kelly <\/strong>in tow. Says Fox:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;So I was thinking it was like glamping, like it was gonna be some kind of five-star experience. But you get there and you really are in the <\/em><strong><em>middle of the jungle<\/em><\/strong><em>, and you don&#8217;t get to eat after like 1 p.m. You have to walk a very far distance to get your water, and you can&#8217;t shower because they&#8217;re in a drought.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;There was nothing glamorous about it, and it&#8217;s all a part of making you vulnerable, so you sort of <\/em><strong><em>surrender to the experience.<\/em><\/strong><em>&#8220;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is there any merit to the Hollywood hype? She joins a wave of celebrities who use psychedelics for mental health.\u00a0<\/mark><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The South American brew is made from the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ayahuasca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ayahuasca vine<\/a><\/strong>, which is rich in a psychoactive compound known as <strong>DMT<\/strong>. The tea has been used by Amazonian tribes for centuries. Shamans take it during rituals to induce a <strong>higher state of consciousness<\/strong> lasting for several hours, or even a day, depending on the dose. Participants are asked to abstain from smoking, hard drugs, coffee, sex, or alcohol up to 2-4 weeks prior to an ayahuasca ceremony. This purifying \u201cprep work\u201d is known as<em> limpia<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re a spiritual explorer who wants to go to Peru, Costa Rica, and Brazil for the \u201csoul searching\u201d benefits of ayahuasca trips, no need to fret. You&#8217;re not going in blind. Ayahuasca retreats are led by experienced shamans who brew the tea and guide you throughout every psychedelic step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One tourist in particular \u2014 the comedian <strong>Neal Brennan<\/strong> \u2014 had self-medicated for years to fight depression. It was only after he tried ayahuasca that he found relief, calling it <em>\u201cthe most profound experience I\u2019ve ever had.\u201d <\/em>On the same trip was <strong>Chris Rock<\/strong>, who reportedly <em>\u201csobbed for seven hours\u201d<\/em> in thanks.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><em>Breaking Down the Ego<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Psychedelics such as ayahuasca, <strong>magic mushrooms<\/strong>, and <strong>magic truffles<\/strong> have the ability to \u201cbreak down\u201d your ego to get to the core of your being in a process called<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/articles\/psychedelic-culture\/what-is-ego-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <strong>ego death<\/strong><\/a>. Doing so allows you to examine the truth of the matter, of who you really are. This way, it\u2019s easier for you to spot the root cause of the problem and how to solve it. Then you can move on with your life\u2026 for real this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Smith, ayahuasca helped him to acknowledge the<strong> trauma of violence <\/strong>during his childhood. He explains to GQ that for decades, he believed that if he kept everyone \u2014 his father, his fans \u2014 laughing, they wouldn\u2019t <em>\u201clash out with violence at him\u201d<\/em> or those he loved. If Smith could keep on being a superstar to make his mother proud, he reasoned, then maybe she would forgive him for \u201cfreezing\u201d on the days his father hit her:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWhat you have come to understand as \u2018Will Smith\u2019, the alien annihilating M.C., the bigger-than-life movie star, is largely a construction \u2014 a carefully crafted and honed character \u2014 <\/em><strong><em>designed to protect myself.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cComedy defuses all negativity. It is impossible to be angry, hateful, or violent when you\u2019re doubled over laughing.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or so Smith used to believe before he <strong>explored his psyche.<\/strong> Not even the funniest joke can heal the most painful trauma of the past. Thankfully, he knows that now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI felt like a combination of having <strong>completed some phase of my life,<\/strong> and also with my father dying. I&#8217;d just never have been able to say this stuff about my father beating up my mother.
