There has been much published research showing exactly<strong> how psychedelics can work as anti-inflammatory agents<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Now, researchers from<strong> Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center<\/strong> have discovered a compound called <strong>2C-H<\/strong>. This was found to produce the best anti-inflammatory results in tests. It turns out, 2C-H is very similar on a molecular level to the psychedelic drug 2C-B<em>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-there-s-always-space-for-serotonin\"><em>There&#8217;s Always Space For Serotonin<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Psychedelic drugs spark their desired effect on the brain by attaching to a <strong>serotonin receptor<\/strong> in the brain called <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/5-HT_receptor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">5HT-2A<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hormone.org\/your-health-and-hormones\/glands-and-hormones-a-to-z\/hormones\/serotonin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Serotonin<\/a><\/strong>, a.k.a. \u201cThe Happy Hormone\u201d, reduces inflammation in the body\u2019s immune cells. Therefore, the more serotonin is secreted, the better for patients with conditions such as <strong>asthma<\/strong> and<strong> arthritis<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-now-think-of-psychedelics-as-a-substitute-for-serotonin\"><em>Now, Think Of Psychedelics as a Substitute For Serotonin&nbsp;<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Like serotonin, psychedelic drugs also spark the 5HT-2A receptor. Thus, substances like psilocybin may help reduce inflammation as well. This opens the possibility of a \u201cno-trip\u201d experience for asthma patients who take psilocybin for relief at present.<\/em> <strong>Photo courtesy: ACS Pharmacol.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>The researchers tested 21 different compounds on rats with symptoms for asthma.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>(This was done to check for any link between <strong>\u201ccanonical signaling pathways\u201d<\/strong> which handles the \u201ctrippy\u201d part, and the desired anti-inflammatory effect.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Since all of the psychedelic compounds activated the 5HT-2A receptor, many of them were able to prevent <em>(and even reverse)<\/em> inflammation in the lungs. And guess what? Anti-inflammatory effects from 2-CH do not correlate with \u201cbehavioral activity\u201d or tripping out\u2026 at all.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cPsychedelic drugs can make [a] strong anti-inflammatory effect. Now they know which chemical they could zero in on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-this-could-mean-for-anti-inflammatory-drugs-in-the-future\"><em>What This Could Mean for Anti-Inflammatory Drugs in the Future<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, many people are cash-strapped due to the COVID19 pandemic. Aside from loss of income from being off-work, many also find themselves cut off from health insurance.<\/p>\n<p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n<\/p>\n<p>Maintenance medicine for chronic conditions like asthma don\u2019t come cheap\u2014 with prescribed inhalers costing at least <strong>$496<\/strong> <strong>each<\/strong>.
