(via Creative Commons)<\/mark><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people see Viking males as terrifying bearded lunatics who wore helmets with wings <em>(or horns)<\/em> who liked to charge headfirst into battle, seemingly without fear. But were they really? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, the Norsemen from Scandinavia <em>did <\/em>raid, colonise, and pillage across Europe. There\u2019s a reason why the years 793-1066 AD are called the <strong>Viking Age<\/strong>; Vikings were feared due to their sheer rage and brute power.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What most people don\u2019t realise, however, is that the Viking warriors\u2019 fury had a trance-like quality to it. One might even call their stubborn strength as inhuman \u2014 and it\u2019s all thanks to psychedelics. Meet the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Berserker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">berserkers<\/a><\/strong>:\u00a0 a class of ancient Viking warriors who owed their frenzied courage on the battlefield to magic mushrooms!\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><em>Berserkers: Ancient Viking Warriors<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Experts on Old Norse culture describe the berserkers as a group of Viking warriors who were known across Europe for their brutality and <strong>trance-like rage<\/strong>. As for their name? The word <em>berserk <\/em>means<em> \u201cout of control with anger or excitement\u201d<\/em> or <em>\u201cwild or frenzied\u201d<\/em> in Modern English. But in Old Norse, <em>berserkr <\/em>was the word for<em> bear-shirt<\/em>, since the Viking warriors wore hollowed-out bear head pelts<em> (or those of other predators)<\/em>. This is why they were also called bear warriors, boar warriors, or wolf warriors. Before battle they would enter into a screaming frenzy, bite their shields, and howl. English scholar <strong>Hilda Ellis Davidson <\/strong>once wrote of the phenomenon:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201c[The berserkers] went without their mailcoats and were mad as hounds or wolves, bit their shields&#8230;they slew men, but <\/em><strong><em>neither fire nor iron had effect upon them<\/em><\/strong><em>. This is called &#8216;going berserk&#8217;.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><em>What is Berserkergang?<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The rage the Vikings showed their enemies was called <em>berserkerang<\/em> or berserk frenzy. Berserkers were seen to have superhuman strength, a dramatic change in their skin color, face swelling, teeth grinding, drooling, muscle twitching, and of course \u2014 uncontrollable madness and rage. As the 12th century historian and poet <strong>Snorri Sturluson<\/strong> once wrote about the berserkers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201c[Odin\u2019s] men rushed forwards without armour, were as <\/em><strong><em>mad as dogs or wolves<\/em><\/strong><em>, bit their shields, and were strong as bears or wild oxen, and killed people at a blow, but [were not burned or bruised]. This was called Berserkergang.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Berserkers would charge into battle and slice through everyone in their way, mostly their foes, with the occasional ally thrown in. After the rage calmed down, the Viking warriors would become very frail and sick, and sleep for days like babies. Drinking tons of alcohol could also explain the Vikings\u2019 rage and numbness to pain, scholars say. But is it enough to sustain rage for hours on end?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to researchers, Vikings took psychedelic mushrooms, indeed, but not of the <em>Psilocybe<\/em> variety. It was more likely <em>Amanita muscaria<\/em> or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amanita_muscaria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fly agaric<\/a><\/strong> mushroom and <em>Amanita pantherina<\/em> or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amanita_pantherina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">panther cap<\/a><\/strong> mushroom. Fly agaric is called that way because it can kill flies, small bugs, and other insects, with <strong>hemolysin<\/strong> \u2014 a chemical that breaks down red blood cells. Until modern times, fly agaric was used as a household bug spray.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both fly agaric and panther cap can trigger<strong> temporary psychosis <\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/delirium\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20371386\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">delirium<\/a><\/strong> that last for hours. But they can also be toxic. You can only suppose the poor Vikings who accidentally poisoned themselves were scratched from the history ledgers . Roch<\/strong> of Geneva reported on the wild delirium of four Italian laborers after they had eaten a <em>\u2018mess of fly amanitas\u2019<\/em>. Of the event, <strong>R. Gordon Wasson<\/strong> wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe delirium was <\/em><strong><em>followed by sleep<\/em><\/strong><em>, and sleep by a return to normal sobriety. Such episodes must have occurred from earliest times, and must have aroused the awe that\u2026would naturally inspire among people whose lives were shaped by beliefs in <\/em><strong><em>supernatural forces<\/em><\/strong><em>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a fun fact: Do you know why in <em>Super Mario Bros.<\/em>, Mario powers up and <strong>gets bigger<\/strong> after absorbing a red mushroom? That\u2019s because it\u2019s a fly agaric!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><em>How Fly Agaric Helped Vikings in Battle <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike \u201ctrue\u201d magic mushrooms with <strong>psilocybin<\/strong>, the main psychoactive compound in fly agaric is <strong>muscimol<\/strong>.  <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Muscimol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Muscimol<\/a> is a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/GABAA_receptor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GABA receptor<\/a><\/strong> agonist, which means it can cause sleepy-hypnotic and hallucinogenic effects. Because the brain has GABA receptors everywhere, muscimol will affect the neurons in many regions. Such as the hippocampus, cerebellum, and cerebral cortex, which all control our <strong>emotions<\/strong> and<strong> decision-making<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Say you were a rookie Viking soldier on your first battle ever. Nervous? Don\u2019t be! After munching on dried<em> Amanita muscari<\/em>a or fly agaric, you can expect the rage to start within <strong>30 to 120 minutes<\/strong> and last for <strong>five to ten hours<\/strong>. There\u2019s some serious side effects, though, including: nausea, drooling, muscle twitching, upset stomach, tremors, and delirium \u2014 all classic signs of <em>berserkergang<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other psychoactive chemical in fly agaric is<strong> ibotenic acid<\/strong>. Also known as ibotenate, ibotenic acid matches with a brain \u201cwire\u201d called <strong>glutamate<\/strong>. Glutamate acts like a stimulant <em>(or a jolt of lightning to the brain)<\/em>. Like muscimol, both glutamate and ibotenic acid *are* toxic in large quantities. But for those who can bear them <em>(get it? bear them?),<\/em> symptoms include confusion, trippy visuals, extreme joy, and memory loss after the high. Funny to think their frenzy on the battlefield owed a lot to the chewing of dried fly agaric mushrooms? There is a general belief that anyone who eats <em>Amanita muscaria <\/em>dies \u2014 a reasonable one due to its toxic chemicals. Quite the opposite for Viking warriors of old, it seems like, who laughed in the sheer face of \u201cno-f\u2019s-given\u201d battle.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, fly agaric and panther cap are not the only <strong>merry-mad mushrooms<\/strong> that can power you up-a like Mario. <em>Psilocybe <\/em>in both its forms \u2014 magic mushrooms and magic truffles \u2014 is well-known for the trippy ability to raise your consciousness via <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/articles\/psychedelic-culture\/what-is-ego-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ego death<\/a><\/strong>.
