Their job is to ensure your safety — physically, emotionally, and psychologically. They might remind you to breathe when the walls start melting. Offer a blanket when things feel cold. Or, yes, hold your hair back if your stomach starts misbehaving.

Most importantly, a human trip-sitter can read subtle cues: body language, tone, tension. They know when you’re spiraling into panic or when you just need quiet. They can ground you back into your body — something even the most advanced AI simply cannot do.

When the Machine Becomes the Guide

So what happens when you swap that warm, steady human presence for a digital entity trained on text?

At first, the idea sounds intriguing — an endlessly patient AI that can reassure you, play ambient playlists, and gently remind you that “you’re safe.” But there’s a darker side.

Chatbots like ChatGPT are powered by Large Language Models (LLMs) — programs designed to generate convincing text based on patterns, not understanding. They can’t tell when you’re in danger, or when your words are a cry for help. They can’t intervene if you’re overheating, dehydrated, or slipping into tricky frame of mind.

And sometimes, they hallucinate — just like you might be.

Psychiatrists from Stanford a UCSF warn that these digital trip-sitters can actually reinforce delusions during vulnerable states. A chatbot’s tendency to agree and affirm can be dangerous when someone is in an altered reality.

In one chilling case reported by The New York Times, a man asked ChatGPT if he could fly if he truly believed it — and the bot replied, “You would not fall.”

Now, imagine hearing that kind of answer while peaking on LSD.

The Appeal: Cheap, Private, and Always Awake

Still, it’s easy to see the draw. Traditional psychedelic therapy is expensive and often inaccessible. Even finding a trusted friend to sit for you can be tricky. Not everyone’s comfortable babysitting you through cosmic ego death.

AI, on the other hand, is available 24/7, judgment-free, and won’t tell anyone what you said about being the reincarnation of Cleopatra.

Na stránke mikrodávky alebo gentle doses, using a chatbot as a companion might even be zábava — chatting about cosmic patterns, generating playlists, or exploring creative thoughts in real time. It can feel like having a curious, talkative friend along for the ride.

But the key words there are gentle a zábava. The moment you step into deeper territory — grief, trauma, existential overwhelm — the chatbot’s limits become glaringly obvious.

The Real Risks: When Reassurance Becomes Reinforcement

AI chatbots are designed to keep the conversation flowing, not to challenge your beliefs. That’s fine when you’re writing poetry. But during a trip, when your sense of reality is fluid, this can spiral quickly.

A human trip-sitter might gently remind you: “You’re not actually dying — it’s the medicine moving through you.”

An AI, on the other hand, might say: “Yes, death is just an illusion. You are becoming one with everything!”

In the wrong moment, that can push someone further from safety, not closer.

Trip-sitting requires embodiment: the ability to sense what’s happening beyond words. Machines don’t have nervous systems, breath, or empathy. It doesn’t know when to stay silent — a vital part of real trip-sitting — nor can it manage emergencies. There have been online reports of users spiraling into paranoia or mania after long conversations with AI “therapists,” even while sober.

Combine that with hallucinogens, and you’ve got a recipe for digital chaos.

Safer (and Still Cool) Alternatives

If you’re exploring psychedelics and want extra support, there are safer, human-centered ways to do it:

🌿 Find a trusted trip-sitter. This could be a close friend, a harm-reduction volunteer, or a trained facilitator.
