In fact, this synth doesn\u2019t make any sound at all&#8230; Not until it is connected to a source of pure electrical energy. Which in this case is that organism that seems to be revealing new talents every day&#8230; the <strong>mushroom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meet <strong>Noah Kalos<\/strong>, better known as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@mycolyco?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MycoLyco<\/a><\/strong>, the mushroom-lovin\u2019 electronic musician who has turned into a sleeper hit on TikTok. How exactly did he manage to play music from the presumably mute mushrooms? Did fashion designer <strong>Stella McCartney<\/strong> really showcase her <strong>mycelium-fabric<\/strong> designs to MycoLyco\u2019s shroom music? So, how does he do it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, Kalos connects a many-wired, <strong>modular synth<\/strong> to the skin of a living mushroom. Next, the wires pick up on the mushroom\u2019s cellular activity, which makes a<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/kutx.org\/features\/the-secret-sounds-of-mushrooms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> bioelectrical<\/a><\/strong> jolt every second. This vibration is then converted into bleeps and bloops, and the rest, and finally finessed into music magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><em>From Simple Life to Meteoric Rise<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Kalos told <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> about what life was like for him before he turned viral on TikTok: a<strong> quiet home <\/strong>in rural North Carolina with his wife and two kids, two and four respectively. It was a frenzy. He retrofitted a spare bedroom as a recording studio &#8211; slash &#8211; mycology \u2018lab\u2019. Kalos now had money to spare, too, as he told Rolling Stone:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI made $5,000 in two weeks from it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Five Minutes of Pink Oyster Mushroom Playing Modular Synthesizer #mushroom #mushroommusic #mycology\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-hlQHYtncww?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-amber-color\">Kalos\u2019s video of a pink oyster mushroom playing a modular synthesizer now has over one million views on YouTube.<\/span><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Flash forward to 2021 where short-form clips are the name of the game. As Mycolyco, Kalos is now a prominent fixture of #mushtok. He has 600,000 followers and a staggering <strong>eight and a half million likes<\/strong> on TikTok. He doesn\u2019t really make as much money as a creator on the Gen-Z app, though, as he once did on YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIf you say how much you make from it, they can kick you out of the Creator Fund&#8230;I don\u2019t want to be the one to have to sue TikTok. I don\u2019t have &#8216;lawyer money&#8217;.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><em>Just a Small Town Boy<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Believe it or not, synthesizer shindigz weren\u2019t always Kalos\u2019s favourite hobby. He spent his boyhood years in Massachusetts, then went to art school at Ohio\u2019s Oberlin College. During all those years, young Noah\u2019s mind was rooted elsewhere: on the low-tech, more eco-friendly approach to agriculture called <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Permaculture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">permaculture<\/a><\/strong>. So, to be even closer to nature, Kalos said, <em>\u201cWhy not\u201d<\/em> and took a job as a field instructor for a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wilderness_therapy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wilderness therapy<\/a> <\/strong>spot. One thing led to another, and his interest in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/articles\/psychedelic-culture\/shroomtember-a-mushroom-hunters-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mushroom foraging<\/a><\/strong> grew wild as the fungi themselves. His camp counselors, on the other hand, were not amused with his \u2018mushroom picking trips\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWilderness survival people were very mycophobic back then.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thankfully, things have improved somewhat in terms of the public acceptance of mushrooms, magic or otherwise. Said Kalos:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI think in the last 10 years, we\u2019ve seen a<\/em><strong><em> big shift <\/em><\/strong><em>in this country. A lot more people are getting out and foraging, and learning to identify mushrooms.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><em>Cordyceps Crisis <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For a couple of months, the Kalos family home also became a full-blown fungi farm. How on earth did it come to that point? Kalos laughs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThe idea originally was to turn this whole studio into a <\/em><strong><em>cordyceps growing room <\/em><\/strong><em>and kind of put the music away for a little bit just to make some money, get the family moved into a bigger house.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cordyceps, also known as the<strong> \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cordyceps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zombie Fungus<\/a>\u2019<\/strong>, are a parasitic fungus that grows out of the brains of dead ants, spiders, and other insects. From being a staple in Tibetan medicine, cordyceps extract has grown into a lucrative business in the U.S. A jar of 90 capsules, for instance, costs around $20 on Amazon. (via Wikimedia Commons)<\/mark><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So how did it go for Kalos\u2019s shot in the dark?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cBut I hit some red tape with being able to sell them because I\u2019m drying them in a house with a dog and all that sort of stuff.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s when he discovered a better money-making opportunity in social media. And boy, did this one pan out!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><em>Viral Sensation<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After going viral for his mushroom synth music, Kalos caught the eyes of not a few celebrities. The streaming giant<strong> Netflix<\/strong> for example, liked his style so much that they contacted him to make music for <em>Vivo<\/em>, a children\u2019s movie. But there was a catch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cThey had me connect some wildflowers to my synthesizer for that&#8230;[Netflix was] afraid of the mushrooms.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even rising pop star <strong>SZA<\/strong> began to follow Kalos on the site. What was it like to grab the attention of a chart-topping singer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI was like, \u2018Oh really? Let me follow her back.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kalos slid into SZA\u2019s DMs for a potential collaboration. The pop star is, after all, well-known for her experimental tunes. So, did SZA take a chance on him?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cShe said yes. But I haven\u2019t heard from her for like a month, so I don\u2019t know what\u2019s up with that. She\u2019s probably busy \u2014 or ghosting me. But the fact that I can say I\u2019m getting ghosted by SZA is cool.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Always look on the bright side eh, MycoLyco!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><em>Mycelium Fabric Fashion Show<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a fun fact. Did you know that <strong>mycelium<\/strong> \u2014 the wispy root-like extensions of mushrooms \u2014 can be used as a substitute for leather? The world of fashion has caught up with the trend, apparently, with English designer <strong>Stella McCartney<\/strong> featuring a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stellamccartney.com\/us\/en\/stellas-world\/the-worlds-first-mylo-garments-created-from-vegan-mushroom-leather.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mushroom-leather purse<\/a><\/strong> during Paris Fashion Week last October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mycelium fabric she used came from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/boltthreads.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bolt Threads<\/a><\/strong>, a startup that makes plant-based alternatives to animal skin, fur, or feathers in fashion. Their big-name clients range from Adidas to Kering, to millennial favourite Lululemon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the runway music, McCartney felt that Kalos\u2019s mushroom synth music was the only logical pick. Kalos thinks his popular video on the topic could be the culprit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI may have accidentally caused a lion\u2019s mane shortage last year. If you look at TikTok, and you see \u2018lion\u2019s mane\u2019, and I have a video with like five million views about how it <\/em><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wholecelium.com\/articles\/psychedelic-studies\/psilocybin-grows-new-neural-conections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">regrows brain cells<\/a><\/em><\/strong><em>\u2026\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ah, the perks of being a #mushtok superstar!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-pale-cyan-blue-color has-text-color\"><em>What the Future Sounds Like for Mushroom Music <\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s next for the farm kid turned amateur mycologist, turned mushroom synth musician? Not only is the process super easy and fun, grow kits themselves are at an all-time bargain.
