Technology has transformed medicine, education, creativity and communication in ways our grandparents could barely imagine.

And yet, something doesn’t feel right.

Loneliness is rising, particularly among young people. Communities are becoming more fragmented. Many of us spend hours each day consuming other people’s lives while feeling strangely disconnected from our own. Despite having almost unlimited access to information, we’re asking some of humanity’s oldest questions with renewed urgency: Why am I here? What makes life meaningful? Where do I belong?

Perhaps that’s why psychedelic research feels so culturally significant right now. Beyond the promising studies on depression, PTSD and addiction, another fascinating pattern keeps appearing. People who have profound psychedelic experiences often come away feeling more connected: to themselves, to other people, to nature, and to life itself.

And according to new research, they may also come away with something many of us are quietly searching for: a stronger sense that life has meaning.

Foto av Austin Chan på Unsplash

A World Full of Noise

Human beings didn’t evolve to process hundreds of notifications a day or compare themselves with thousands of strangers before breakfast.

For most of our history, life unfolded on a human scale. Communities were small. Stories were passed around campfires. Seasons shaped daily life, and meaning was woven into family, ritual, nature and shared experience.

Today’s world offers extraordinary opportunities, but it also competes relentlessly for one precious resource: our attention.

Social media platforms, news feeds and streaming services are designed to keep us engaged, constantly pulling our focus from one thing to the next. It’s stimulating, but stimulation isn’t the same as fulfilment. You can be endlessly entertained while feeling profoundly disconnected.

This isn’t an argument against technology. Far from it. Technology has enriched countless lives and connected millions of people who would otherwise never have met. But connection through a screen isn’t always the same as belonging. Information isn’t the same as wisdom. And endless communication doesn’t automatically answer deeper questions about purpose.

That quiet hunger for meaning seems to be growing alongside our digital lives.

Photo by Maxim Ilyahov on Unsplash

What Gives Life Meaning?

Psychologists often talk about “meaning in life” as something surprisingly measurable. It reflects whether life feels coherent, purposeful and connected to something larger than ourselves, rather than expecting us to have all the answers. People who report a strong sense of meaning also tend to experience better wellbeing, greater resilience and lower rates of depression.

A recent paper published in Gränser inom psykologi explored whether psychedelic experiences could influence exactly this feeling.

Researchers analysed three separate studies involving psilocybin-assisted therapy, psychedelic retreats and clinical trials. Despite their different settings, they all pointed in the same direction.

After psychedelic experiences, participants consistently reported a stronger presence of meaning – the feeling that life already possesses purpose and significance. At the same time, their search for meaning decreased slightly. Rather than desperately looking for something missing, many people simply felt more grounded in what was already there.

Three Studies, One Consistent Pattern

The research combined data from three very different settings.

The first followed almost 900 people attending psychedelic retreats using psilocybin or ayahuasca. Participants completed questionnaires before their ceremonies and for up to six months afterwards. Although fewer participants completed the final follow-up, those who did consistently reported a greater sense of meaning in their lives.

The second, known as the Insight Study, took place under tightly controlled laboratory conditions. Twenty-eight healthy volunteers with no previous psychedelic experience received both a placebo dose and, one month later, a full 25 mg dose of psilocybin. Afterwards, participants again reported meaningful increases in purpose and life meaning.

The third was the Psilodep trial, which compared psilocybin-assisted therapy with the antidepressant escitalopram in people living with treatment-resistant depression. Participants receiving psilocybin, alongside psychological support, experienced significantly larger increases in meaning than those taking the conventional antidepressant.

Across all three studies, the message was remarkably consistent.

As the researchers concluded:

“The convergence of evidence from multiple studies shows that psychedelic use has a robust and long-lasting positive effect on meaning in life. One of the biggest effects appears to be a reduction in activity within the Standardläge Nätverk – the collection of brain regions associated with self-refocused thinking, rumination and our ongoing internal narrative.

When that mental chatter quietens, people often describe feeling less trapped inside their own stories. Instead of experiencing themselves as isolated individuals, many report a heightened sense of connection – with loved ones, with nature, or with existence itself. Clinical researchers have repeatedly found that feelings of connectedness are among the strongest predictors of positive therapeutic outcomes following psychedelic experiences.

The recent meaning study found something similar. Participants who experienced mystical-type experiences, emotional breakthroughs or ego dissolution – where the usual sense of self temporarily softens – were also the ones most likely to report lasting increases in life’s meaning.

For many, it isn’t that psychedelics provide answers. They simply seem to create space for people to reconnect with values, relationships and perspectives that modern life often pushes into the background.

Coming Back to Community

Perhaps that’s why these findings feel bigger than mental health alone. Modern society has become remarkably efficient at connecting devices. Connecting human beings is proving much harder.

Meaning has always been something we build together. It grows through shared meals, conversations, family traditions, music, laughter, time in nature and caring for people beyond ourselves, experiences that can’t be downloaded or streamed.

Interestingly, one of the most common themes reported after psilocybin experiences is a renewed appreciation for exactly these things. Participants frequently describe reconnecting with family, repairing relationships, spending more time outdoors or feeling a stronger desire to contribute to their communities.

Of course, lasting change still requires action. But if psilocybin can help people step outside rigid thought patterns and remember what genuinely matters to them, it may offer something increasingly rare in today’s distracted world.

Photo by Kimson Doan on Unsplash

A Gentle Reminder of What Matters

The researchers behind the new paper are careful not to overstate their findings. The retreat study had a high dropout rate, and all three studies relied on participants reporting their own experiences. More research is still needed. But taken alongside the growing body of work on depression, anxiety, addiction and psychological flexibility, another picture is beginning to emerge.

Psilocybin may not simply reduce symptoms. For many people, it appears to strengthen something equally important: a sense that life is worth participating in. In a culture that constantly asks for our attention, that may be one of the most valuable gifts imaginable.

Technology will continue to evolve, and that’s something to celebrate. But perhaps the real challenge of the coming decades isn’t finding new ways to connect online. It’s remembering how to reconnect offline – with ourselves, with one another, with the natural world, and with the quiet feeling that our lives belong to something larger than endless notifications and scrolling feeds.

If the latest research is any indication, psilocybin isn’t going to just berätta för us the meaning of life is. It may simply help us notice that it was waiting for us all along.

Despite living in the most connected age in history, loneliness and the search for meaning are on the rise.
