Have you ever been absolutely certain something was true… only to discover it apparently never was?

Maybe you remember the Monopoly Man wearing a monocle. (He doesn’t.) Perhaps you could swear Pikachu had a black tip on his tail. (He didn’t.) Or maybe you’ve spent years quoting Darth Vader saying, “Luke, I am your father,” only to learn the line is actually, “No, I am your father.”

Welcome to the wonderfully weird world of the Mandela Effect.

For most psychologists, it’s a fascinating example of how memory works. For others, it’s something stranger altogether: a hint that reality might be more flexible than we assume, or that our minds occasionally brush against alternate possibilities.

And while there’s no scientific evidence that psychedelics cause the Mandela Effect, many people who have experienced psilocybin report something similar: the profound feeling that the world is much bigger, stranger, and more mysterious than it first appears.

What Is the Mandela Effect?

Der Begriff Mandela Effect was coined by paranormal researcher Fiona Broome after she discovered thousands of people shared the same vivid memory that Nelson Mandela died in prison during the 1980s. He didn’t. Mandela was released in 1990 and became South Africa’s president before passing away in 2013.

Since then, countless examples have emerged. Some of the most famous include:

  • The Berenstain Bears (many remember ‘Berenstein Bears’)
  • The Monopoly Man (people often remember a monocle that never existed)
  • KitKat (many insist there used to be a hyphen)
  • C-3PO von Star Wars (one of his legs has always been silver)
  • Fruit of the Loom’s logo, which many remember including a cornucopia.

On their own, these seem like harmless memory mistakes. What makes them intriguing is that large groups of unrelated people often share exactly the same incorrect memory.

That naturally raises a question.

Why?

The Science of False Memories

The mainstream scientific explanation is surprisingly compelling. Memory isn’t like a video recording stored in your brain. Every time you remember something, you’re actually reconstructing it. Details can be added, removed, or subtly changed without you ever noticing.

Psychologists call this reconstructive memory, you see, our brains are remarkably good at filling in gaps.

The Monopoly Man seems like the sort of character who sollte wear a monocle, partly because he’s often confused with Mr Peanut, who actually does. Likewise, “-stein” is a far more common surname ending than “-stain”, Herstellung von Berenstein Bears feel more familiar.

Our brains favour patterns over precision. Once enough people make the same assumption, it can begin to feel like shared reality rather than shared misremembering.

As strange as the Mandela Effect feels, cognitive psychology offers plenty of reasons why it happens. But that’s only one side of the conversation.

Could There Be More Going On?

Outside mainstream science, the Mandela Effect has become fertile ground for some wonderfully imaginative ideas. Some suggest we’re slipping between parallel timelines. Others believe consciousness occasionally catches glimpses of alternate histories.

MIT computer scientist Rizwan Virk, in The Simulated Multiverse, explores whether reality might resemble an immense computational simulation containing countless branching possibilities rather than one fixed universe. Meanwhile, science fiction writer Philip K. Dick spent much of his career asking similar questions. His novel The Man in the High Castle imagines a world where the Axis powers won the Second World War. As the story unfolds, characters begin encountering hints that another version of history exists — one eerily similar to our own.

In a sense, our reality becomes their Mandela Effect.

Of course, neither Virk nor Dick proves alternate universes exist. What they offer instead is something perhaps more valuable: a framework for imagining reality as something richer than a single, straightforward story.

Quantum Physics Doesn’t Prove Alternate Timelines…

Whenever the Mandela Effect comes up, quantum physics isn’t usually far behind, however, t’s worth separating science from speculation here.

Quantum mechanics tells us that particles behave in ways that seem deeply unintuitive. Before measurement, they can exist as probability waves rather than fixed locations.

One interpretation (die Many Worlds Interpretation, proposed by physicist Hugh Everett III) suggests these possibilities don’t disappear when measurements occur. Instead, reality continually branches into multiple versions. It’s an cool idea, but it’s also highly debated.

Importantly, there is currently no evidence linking the Mandela Effect to quantum mechanics or parallel universes. But the theory has inspired decades of philosophy, fiction and conversations about consciousness, identity and reality itself. Sometimes asking the question is almost as interesting as answering it.

Where Psilocybin Enters the Conversation

So what does any of this have to do with magic mushrooms? It’s not that psilocybin creates alternate timelines, or that it proves the Mandela Effect. Instead, psilocybin has an extraordinary ability to loosen the rigid assumptions we normally make about ourselves and the world around us.

With psilocybin, familiar things can suddenly feel unfamiliar. Patterns emerge, connections appear, and the ordinary becomes extraordinary.

Researchers believe part of this comes from psilocybin temporarily reducing activity in the brain’s Standardmodus-Netzwerk (DMN) — a network involved in our habitual sense of self and our everyday mental narratives.

When that network quietens down, the brain becomes more flexible, and ideas that once seemed impossible suddenly feel worth considering. This creates space to ask different questions.

Could consciousness be larger than the individual self?

Are our everyday assumptions filtering far more reality than they reveal?

What if certainty itself is the illusion?

These are questions that philosophers have wrestled with for millennia, and psychedelics often bring people face-to-face with them in a deeply personal way.

Why Psychedelics Feel So Meaningful

One reason psilocybin continues to fascinate researchers is that people frequently describe their experiences as among the most meaningful of their lives. Studies have linked psychedelic experiences with increases in feelings of connectedness, awe, life meaning and psychological flexibility.

Many people come away not believing they’ve discovered ultimate truth, but recognising how little they truly know. That shift, from certainty to curiosity, may be one of psychedelics’ greatest gifts. You could argue that the Mandela Effect invites the same mindset.

Whether it’s explained by memory, neuroscience or something stranger, it reminds us that our experience of reality isn’t as objective as we’d like to think.

Maybe the Mystery Is the Point

It’s tempting to treat the Mandela Effect like a puzzle that needs solving. Either it’s false memory…

…or it’s proof of parallel universes.

We’ll leave that up to you. Human memory is undeniably fallible, however, at the same time, consciousness remains one of science’s greatest unsolved mysteries.

We still don’t fully understand how subjective experience emerges from the brain, why altered states feel so profoundly real, or why certain experiences permanently reshape the way people see themselves and the world.

The more neuroscience learns about perception, the clearer it becomes that we don’t experience reality directly, rather, we experience the brain’s best interpretation of it. Sometimes that interpretation is astonishingly accurate. Sometimes it confidently invents a monocle that never existed.*

And sometimes, under the influence of a mushroom that has accompanied humanity for thousands of years, it becomes flexible enough to glimpse entirely new ways of making sense of existence. Whether those insights reveal hidden dimensions or simply hidden corners of our own minds remains an open question. Either way, it’s one of the most fascinating journeys consciousness has to offer.
