Culinary mushrooms that you buy at the store — such as your buttons, your oysters, your shiitake, your portobellos — can truly make a dish sing. Psilocybin mushrooms, on the other hand, tend to be a little bit more difficult to get on with, taste-wise. That’s not to say they are inedible — some people quite enjoy the earthy, nutty, flavor — but for most people it’s not really the part of the a shroom trip that they look forward to.

However, as psychedelic queen Mary Poppins (you’ve see her fly with that umbrella right?!) likes to say “a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.” You simply have to pair your shrooms with something yummy and you’re away! So, we’ve compiled a list of the most popular ways to make magic mushrooms that little bit more delectable, from food, to drink, and in-between. First however, a note on cooking with magic mushrooms and truffles.

Why Might You Want to Cook with Magic Mushrooms/Truffles?

  • To disguise the taste
  • To reduce nausea
  • As a microdosing method
  • To add a trippy edge to a dinner party or picnic

It is important to note, that depending on how you prepare your magic mushrooms and truffles the potency may be reduced or increased. This is more likely to happen if, for example, you are adding your mushrooms to a soup or stew. If you are making a beverage or chocolates this is less likely to occur. For many people a softer trip is one of the appeals of cooking with magic mushrooms, however, for those you want a more intense trip, non-cooking recipes may be preferable.
Combining magic truffles or shrooms with citrus fruits like lemons or orange can cause the effects to kick in sooner, be a little stronger, and wear off faster. This is due to the citric acid breaking down the psilocybin into psilocin, the bioavailable form of psilocybin. This is known as Lemon Tek or Lemon Technique.

A Note on Temperature

When cooking with psilocybin mushrooms or truffles, you must be wary of heat. Psilocybin, which is the main trippy compound, begins to break down when heated to over 72.5°C (162.5°F). This means that it is vital to keep temperatures lower than usual, so the shrooms can retain their powers. One way around this is by adding your shrooms or truffles later on, such as stirring them into a sauce as it begins to cool.

Fresh or Dry?

You can cook with both fresh and dried magic mushrooms or truffles. When using fresh, it is best to match them with fresh items, such as in a salad, or a pasta sauce. You can basically treat them like normal mushrooms flavour palette-wise. Dried mushrooms are known to be a little less passable, and hence, most people chop them up small, often making a powder than can be sprinkled on, or mixed into things. It is also important to note that dried magic mushrooms and truffles are far more potent than fresh. (Check out our dosage calculator here.)

Tastiest Ways to Eat Magic Mushrooms and Truffles

All Chocolate Everything

Adding chocolate makes almost anything taste better, and there’s a reason that mixing shrooms and chocolate is such a popular option. Because it works! And, it’s a long, long, long tried and tested combo. The ancient Mesoamericans used to combine their psychedelic mushrooms with cacao during special ceremonies and rituals. This was supposed to heighten and intensify the effects of the mushrooms, but also increases sensorial enjoyment, because, well — yum.

For magic mushroom hot chocolate, make as usual, then stir in some powdered magic mushrooms or truffles once the liquid is sufficiently cool. Alternatively you can infuse milk with fresh magic truffles, and add cocoa, or really hack the formula and infuse chocolate milk from the store.

You could also make psilocybin-infused brownies, chocolate cake, or follow our delicious magic mushroom chocolate recipe.

Just be sure not to bake your magic truffles or shrooms above 72′ Celsius!

There are always new and tasty “Raw”, “No-Bake” and “Paleo” cake, brownie and other dessert recipes popping up on the internet. These would work wonderfully with a psychedelic infusion.

Tea Time!

Making magic mushroom or truffle tea is a tried and true formula, beloved by many. Of course, it can simply be a way to reduce nausea and speed up the onset of a trip. But, there are also an endless amount of ways you can spice up your psychedelic beverage. Did somebody say chai?!

Some tips to transform your shroom-tea time:

  • Mix it up: Using different flavours of tea, from herbal to fruity and spicy mixes, can really improve the shroom tea experience and add another layer to the experience.
  • Get fresh: Its a little more work than simply dunking a bag, but many of the same principles apply. Fresh ginger, mint, or any other herb can add a zing to your tea. Citrus is also a popular addition. If it infuses in water and tasted good — bung it in!
  • Ice, ice, baby: Perfect for summer, why not make iced tea? You can keep it floral and fresh, or make like they do in the southern states of the U.S and add a hefty glug of sugar or syrup. Simply infuse your tea, add your accoutrements, let it cool, and top up with ice.

Pizza!

The don of hang-out foods, a slice of ‘za is the perfect accompaniment for magic mushrooms. However, so as not to deactivate the power of psilocybin, you must be smart with how you add your shrooms. There are two simple ways you can do this, and both call for a ready made pizza. So, whether you order it, buy it frozen, or make one from scratch, the shrooms must come last. The first way is by grinding up dry shrooms and sprinkling them over your cooked pizza. The second is slicing up fresh magic mushrooms or truffles, placing them on the pizza, and gently reheating at a very low temperature — just enough for them to melt slightly into the cheese.

Get Juicy

A the smart way to get high with your 5-a-day. Smoothies or juices are an ideal way to consume magic mushrooms or truffles while totally masking the flavour. If you are making your beverage fresh, simply add mushroom powder, or chopped up fresh mushrooms or truffles, to your blender and pulse, pulse, pulse. Alternatively, you can get a store-bought smoothie or juice, add your mushroom powder and shake it up to blend it together. The acid content of the fruit juice will work in a similar way to a Lemon Tek preparation and increase the speed of the onset of effects. Fresh!

The Icing on the Cake

Although baking with magic mushrooms is possible without destroying the psilocybin, a way to truly ensure your baked goods stay psychedelic is by infusing the frosting with magic mushrooms! Simply add magic mushroom powder alongside the powder sugar when mixing a batch of icing, and start piping that trippy goodness onto your gateau. Suitable for birthday cakes, wedding cakes, and everything in between (with the party’s consent of course!)

Important Note:  when combining food and psilocybin it is important to start low and go slow, as with all psychedelic exploration. Because of the extra work your digestive system must do to access the magic in your mushrooms, make sure to allow at least 1 hour and 30 minutes for the effects to take effect. You don’t want to have that extra slice of magic pizza, or 2nd cupcake only to realize the first one was enough minutes later.

Stay safe, stay delicious!
